Pittsburg Fa Oct 1 When

the
last

2000 wa = awaiting the arrival oi the train
As the train pnlled up every voice
screeched a hoarse welcome and in live
seconds the crowd became a swaying
pushing mob utterly regardless of the
authorities One wildeyed enthusiastic
man climbed over the rilirg of the plat-
form with a now are you Mr Presi-

and then turning gave the call for tnreei
cheers from already hoaree throats The
President stepped down to the station
platform and an attempt was made to
Jusfe the multitude before him to give an
opportunity for handshaking but despite
the commands threat entreaties and
even biows of those who tried to manage
the affair thft people surged ahead from
behind and in front as well There were
women and small children m a close

who teemed in moital danger were
rescued by being drogsed from the car
platform The President was

kept his place below smiling at first but
with more earnest and protesting looks
later He grasped a hand wen he saw
one thrust hetween or over or around
those who were in front d motioned
vigorously to the mass to keep back irnn

AT INDIANArOMS
iNDiAXAPOiTS Ind Oct 1 The day
dawnea m a drizzle and the outlook for
the reception was giocray enough but the
Presidents good luck brought him a
burst of fauusnino as the procession
moved IS was too late however to
contribute towards swelling the crowds
and the number waj not so great as it
would otherwise have been Still it has
been exceeded heie only by the crowd
that greeted Blaine The line of march
straight down Washington street from
tne railroad crossing where the President
left the cats to go to the Siatc House
where he was formally itceived and held
his reception is just about a mile ia
length and ou either slJe the waiks w ro
packed with people The decorations
along the line which is one < business
blocks exclusively was cjiflncd to the
buildinns the street being marked Only
by hugp ovemanglpg flags red white and
bine streamers witn here and there ever-
green wre tns and pictures of President
and Mrs Cleveland
In all tliiections and along the resi-
dence streets particularly those through
which the President passed after tne
public rt caption flags portraits em-
blems and evergreen designs were dis-
played Mere elaborate deeorations had
been panncd and awaited only a chance
amid the rain of the previous day3 to by
carried out but the chance never came
so that the citys gala dress wa3 a matter
of taste and impulse The procession
moved promptly on time at lr oclock
First came a squad of mounted police
stretching from enrb to curb Broad
street 120 feet wide had been cleared of
every vehicle Behind came a moving
mass with fl fing flags and flashing mili-
tary accoutrements On either Bide
were packtd people Every window
swarmed with sightseere and the
tops of the houses had an occasional
fringe of spectators Over all a hush fell
as the nechs were craned to catch a view
of
THK GUK3TS OF THE HOUR
Following the police came a mounted
escort a vast body gaily caparisoned and
moving with the precision of trained cav-
alry Next came the Governors staff
m gorgeous ofiicial uniform while be-
hind marched a platoon of police fol-
lowed by a large nd splendidly dressed
band of fine musicians Bebiad those
marched the light infantry a cracs local
military organization miking a striking
display Then rode Chief Marshal Gen-
eral Knefler and staff and immediately
following came the Preei lents escort
the Hendricks club to fee number of

club formed iu a hollow square ear

followed at either side arranged ia rows
two abreast The open carriage hidden
by the drapery of flags was dran by

the right sat the President By his side
was Mrs Cleveland On the opposite
seat was exSenator McDonald the threa
being the sole occupants The progrefs
of the vehicle was marked b7 occasional
cheers Hats were waved and handker
chiefs flattered from every window Tae
President was in his customary suit of
black with hia silk hat As thp carriage
moved slowly up the street There
was distinctly felt a social atmos
paere and greeting which was a tribute
altogether fitting and of finer flavor than
the noisy demonstration of political
ring3 The general manner gave this
out as the crowd swept over the curb-
stones in the street making two c eat
streams of people flowing down bcrind
the escorting clubs Men women and
children were undeterred by the muddy
condition of the streets an J ye withal
there vas nothing moUcy in the mass
It was well mannered cordial and rc

the city officials followed by those ci the
reception committee and these in turn by
