Liz Higgle for South Texas Catholic
Former students at St. John Nepomucene School in Robstown gather for Mass and reunion on Sept 5. At
one time, St. John Nepomucene had twelve grades. The elementary school shut down in 1986 while the last
high school graduation class was in May, 1970.
REUNION: Education gave purpose to faith
Continued from page 7
vigil Mass at St. John Nepo-
muncene with Father Bobby
Chapa, SOLT, as celebrant.
In his homily, Father Chapa
called this reunion a joyful cel-
ebration and urged everyone
to cherish their time together.
“It is beautiful to reminisce
and to spiritually remember
those who have died. It is a
time to carry on traditions
and to be grateful to those
teachers, parents and Pastor
Father George Scecina who
founded this school. You are
witnesses and ambassadors
of Christ. You carry forth the
Christian beliefs you learned
at St. John Nepomuncene,”
Father Chapa said.
After the closing of Mass,
former students and their fam-
ilies poured out of die church
eager to visit with classmates.
Three old friends, Fuchs and
Jaque Wright Loeffler, both
of the class of 1961, and Joyce
Maloy Studer, class of i960,
hugged and laughed as they
shared their lives since high
school graduation.
Talking about what they
cherished and were grateful
for concerning their Catho-
lic education at St. John, all
three agreed that it was the
well-rounded education with
Christian beliefs.
“The nuns were very encour-
aging for us to pursue higher
education,” said Studer who
lives in Fredericksburg, Texas
and attends St. Mary Church.
Fuchs resides in San Anto-
nio and is a parishioner at St.
Francis of Assisi. For Loeffler,
her education at St. John
Nepomucene made it easier
for her to “keep her faith.”
“My Catholic education
gave a purpose for my Catho-
lic faith,” said Loefller who
lives in Helotes, Texas and at-
tends St. Anthony Mary Claret
Church.
After the Mass, everyone
was invited to tour the old
school that now is used for
religious education classes.
“Our teachers, the Sisters
of Providence always told us
offer up our sweat to God,”
remarked Ann Wright Burt,
class of 1966.
Laughing, Sister Barbara
Bluntzer, SP, a Sister of Provi-
dence of St. Mary of the Woods
and an eighth grade teacher
at St. John from 1962-67,
disclosed how she used the
open windows and transom
windows not only for cross-
ventilation but for catching
misbehaving students when
her back was turned.
“I used the reflections in the
transom windows to watch my
students. They were always
amazed that I could catch
them misbehaving while my
back was turned,” she said.
Sister Bluntzer, who grew up
in the St John Nepomucene
Parish, did not attend St. John
school but was still influenced
by the Sisters of Providence
who taught in the parish.
“I knew the Sisters from
the parish as a child. I would
always go and visit with them
when they baked cookies on
Saturday,” explained Sister
Bluntzer.
As die classmates left the old
school building for the dinner
and dance, reunion coordina-
tor, John Bluntzer remarked,
“This reunion is a big suc-
cess. The turn out is bigger
than previous reunions. We
are so glad so many came. It
is amazing how when you are
young you can’t wait to get
away, and when you are old,
you want to return,” Bluntzer
said.
