Dear South Texas Catholic readers...
For the last 14 months. I've
been blessed with the opportu-
nity to write for the South Texas
Catholic and serve the Lord by
helping to spread the message
of the Gospel, I feel privileged
to have been able to tell you, our
readers, many good stories about
wonderful people in our dioc-
esan family w ho do so much for
others in the community.
So many of you have touched
my life in ways I can only try to
describe. I’ve learned so much
during my stay about myself and my faith, and I thank you all for the roles you have
played in this great experience.
So, it is with some sadness that I tell you that this is my last issue of the STC as
the staff writer. My husband has finally, after a year and a half of relentless
studying, earned his wings as an aviator in the United States Navy. To say I am
proud of him would be an understatement. At any rate, we are off to Jacksonville,
Florida for the final six months of his training. My family is near Orlando, so it will
be nice to be close to them again.
I have enjoyed Corpus Christi very much, and I will sorely miss my job at the
STC. Thank you, all of you, who have made my experience here so special.

Bishop Rene Gracida and Coadjutor
Bishop Roberto Gonzalez joined Bishop
Tamayo, an auxiliary bishop of the
Galveston-Houston Diocese and a former
priest of the Diocese of Corpus Christi, for
the event sponsored by the Columbus Fleet
Association and the Corpus Christi diocese
in conjunction with the Corpus Christi mu-
seum of Science and History.
“We are a pilgrim people." said Bishop
Tamayo, who traced the history of faith
through the lives of Biblical figures, St.
Francis of Assisi. Martin Luther King, Jr.,
and Pope John Paul II.
Although the Gospel message has been
passed on through the millennia. Bishop
Tamayo asked the congregation if it was
being lived.
“ Have we arrived yet in a society where
each individual is blessed and respected?"
he questioned. "Tonight you and I are in a
safe harbor.. .but tomorrow we will be out-
ward bound." He challenged the people to
take the Gospel message to their communi-
ties. "Let them see how one candle can light
another, how one heart can be open to an-
other, how one hand can grasp another...”
When people begin to live the Gospel mes-
sage "then we can say we have arrived.”
said the bishop.
John Nicholson, a parishioner of Corpus
Christi Cathedral, said he came to the event
for its historical and faith significance.
"I do believe in the evangelization of the
world. 1 think it's already starting to hap-
pen,” said Nicholson.
