Safe Environment Classes Offered Throughout
Diocese
One hundred one Safe Environment Coordinators offer
CMSE core and recertification classes in parishes and
schools throughout the diocese on an on-going basis. The
South Texas Catholic newspaper and the diocesan web site
publish the list of all known upcoming classes.
Participants are welcome at any class. Pre-registration is
not required and there is no charge.
Dioccsc of Corpus Christi Safe Environment Audit
Complete
Diocesan Safe Environment programs and activities are
audited annually by the United States Catholic Conference
of Bishops National Review Board. The Diocese of Corpus
Christi was audited in September 2005. The extensive and
comprehensive audit process closely examines diocesan
documents, policies, processes and operations related to
the USCCB Charter for the Protection of Children and Young
People. A key component of the Charter is the
requirement that dioceses be accountable for their efforts
in protecting children and youth.
The Diocese of Corpus Christi was determined, at the
close of the audit, to be fully compliant with the Charter.
Volunteer Requirements
Volunteers are at the heart of parish programs. Without the
generosity and selflessness of faithful volunteers, most parish
programs could not take place. Volunteers make it happen
- they enrich and expand our faith life in countless ways.
In this diocese, volunteers are classified as “unpaid
employees.” As such, according to policy, volunteers must
meet the same standards as paid employees, and the pastor
or Catholic school principal is responsible for the supervision
and performance of volunteers. Accordingly, prior to
assuming any parish duties in which they will have contact
with minors, volunteers must meet the same “basic 4”
requirements as paid employees.
1. ) Employment application (first two pages only)
2. ) Criminal history background check
3. ) Signed Code of Conduct on file in parish or school
office
4. ) Current CMSE training certification
These “basic 4” elements are a part of the volunteers
personnel record and should be kept on file in the parish or
school office.
Parish/School Audits to Begin in February
The Office for Child and Youth Protection will conduct
parish and Catholic school audits from February 2006
through May 2006. The purpose of the audit is to assess
parish and school compliance with diocesan policies and
USCCB requirements, as well as to assist parishes and schools
when necessary and appropriate.
Pastors and principals received information regarding the
date of their audit during the last week of January.
Thousands fill national shrine for vigil
Mass marking Roe anniversary
WASHINGTON (CNS) - They
were just an aisle apart but almost-6-
month-old Abigail Matava and 102-
year-old Hattie Proctor symbolized
the full spectrum of life that thou-
sands of pro-lifers jammed the
Basilica of the National Shrine of the
Immaculate Conception in Washing-
tonjan. 22 to celebrate. More than
6,000 people — many of them high
school and college students — filled
every square inch of the basilica's
upper church, including the side
chapels, and its lower Crypt Church
for the National Prayer Vigil for Life
on the anniversary of the 1973 Roe v.
Wade decision legalizing abortion on
demand. "We gather in this sacred
space to bear witness yet again to the

nation since the Supreme Court
declared 33 years ago today that the
life of a human being, a life created in
God's image, may he ended before its
birth," said Cardinal William H.
Keeler of Baltimore, the main cel-
ebrant and homilist of the vigil Mass.
"We come together to pray that this
darkest of clouds might at last be
lifted. We come together again to pray
for the triumph of life," said the
cardinal, who is chairman of the U.S.
bishops' Committee on Pro-Life
Activities.

from President George W Bush was broadcast to the
crowd. The president, calling from Manhattan, Kan.,
where he was delivering a speech on the war, told the
rally participants that positive steps have occurred in the
pro-life movement, but added that "there's more work to
be done."
"We're vigorously promoting parental notification
lawrs, adoption, teen abstinence, crisis pregnancy
programs and the vital work of our faith-based groups,"
he said.
The president, in his four-minute address, noted that
the House has passed a bill to ensure that "state parental
involvement laws are not circumvented by those who
take minors across state lines to have abortions." The
Senate "needs to pass this bill so I can sign it into law,"
he added.
Rep. Todd Tiahrt, R-Kan., told the crowd that the
president has "done his job," and now it is "time for
Congress to do their job" by passing anti-abortion
measures. "A lot has happened, but a lot still needs to,"
he said, reiterating an unstated theme for the day.
