UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE0
CLIFFORD E. GARTRELL, OF WADSWORTH, TEXAS.
TANK.1.,213,183.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 23, 1917.
Application filed Iuly 31, 1913. Serial No. 782,268.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. CLIFFORD E. Gat-
TRELL, a citizen of the United States, resid-
ing at Wadsworth, in the county of Mata-
5 gorda, State of Texas, have invented cer-
tain new and useful Improvements in Tanks;
and I do hereby declare the following to be
a full, clear, and exact description of the.
invention, such as will enable others skilled
10 in the art to'which it appertains to make and
use the same.
This invention relates to certain novel and.
useful improvements in tanks and has par-
ticular application to a tank provided with
15 means whereby all sediment and dirt which
has flowed into the tank with the water will
be automatically removed therefrom, the
tank being to all intents and. purposes self-
cleaning. In the present instance I propose
20 to provide a tank adapted to receive water
from a suitable point of discharge, such for
instance, as the eave pipe of a house, the dis-
charge pipe of a pump or the like, this tank
being provided with an attachment through
25 which the water flows under pressure of the
water in the tank so that impurities or for-
eign matter which may have passed into the
tank with the water will be carried off
through the attachment. .
30 A further object of my invention is to pro-
vide an attachment for tanks which may be
readily and quickly placed in any well
known form of tank, even though the latter
has been installed, and which will efficiently
35 perform the functions for which it. is de-
signed.
I also propose to provide a self cleaning
tank which will embody the desired fea-
tures of simplicity and convenience and
'10 which may be manufactured and marketed
at a relatively low cost.
With the above recited objects and others
of a similar nature in view, my invention
consists in the construction, combination
45 and arrangement of parts set forth in and
falling within the scope of the appended
claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1
is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken
50 through a tank embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same with
the cover of the tank removed and showing
the suction coil in the bottom. Fig. 3 is an
enlarged detail perspective view of a por-tion of the coil and showing the openings 55
in the bottom thereof through which the
water is adapted to pass.
Referring now to the accompanying draw-
ings in detail, the letter A indicates a tank
which may be of any suitable form or char- 60
acter and made of any desirable material,
such for instance as galvanized iron. This
tank is preferably provided adjacent its up-
per end with an opening 1 through which
leads a water discharge pipe 2 which may 65
convey the water from any suitable point,
such for instance as the eave of a house. The
tank is further provided with a top or cover
3, which in the present instance is of ap-
proximately conical form and is provided 70
with reinforcing rods 4, the top of .said
cover being surrounded by a hood 5 having
openings 6 therein for the passage of air.
The vertical wall of the tank is provided
adjacent the bottom thereof with a discharge 75
cock 7. Arranged within the tank and
adapted to rest upon the bottom thereof is a
circular coil pipe 8, the bottom face of this
coil being flattened as at -9 so as to rest upon
the bottom of the tank, to which bottom this 80
coil is secured by soldering or other suitable.
means. This circular pipe is further pro-
vided at the sides thereof with rows or se-
ries of openings 10 through which the water
may pass. The inner end of the coil pipe is 85
shown at 11 and lies at the center of the coil,
while from the outer end 12 of the coil ex-
tends a vertical pipe 13 which runs up along-
side the inner wall of the tank and is provided
at its top end with a discharge 14 which pro- 90
jects through the wall of the tank adjacent
the upper edge thereof and preferably at a
point below the water line.
From the above description, taken in con-
nection with the accompanying drawings, 95
the construction and operation of my im-
proved self-cleaning tank will be readily ap-
parent. As the tank fills with water through
the inlet pipe 2, it is forced by the pressure
into the coil through the openings or aper- 100
tures 10 in the sides of the coil and passing
up through the pipe 13 carries with it any
sediment or foreign matter which is dis-
charged through the overflow or discharge
opening 14. 105
What I claim is:
In an apparatus of the class described, the
combination with a tank having an inlet
