REDUCE TEE TARIFF
The blessings of lioerty in commercial
as well as in personal matters have been
fully illustrated by the increased trade
between this country and Mexico under
the revised treaty stipulations Our ex-
ports to Mexico have increased but little
short of 100 per cent in the past year
and this has been brought about by
mutual concessions and mutual tariff
reductions Those gentlemen who sre so
valiantly straggling for free trade with
Carada should extend the scope of their
labors and work for free trade with Mex-
ico and all the sister republics of South
America If we are to hold our doors
open free to the toilers of tha earth and
offar the downtrodden of all
lands an asylum from oppression
We should endeavor to secure for
thsm a market for the products of their
labor The poor who come to our shores
must engage in productive Industries in
order to exist and when an article Is pro-
duced it should meet with no obstacles in
the way of finding a market This Is true

Witt Talmage D D spoke in the Brook-
lyn Tabernacle tonight as usual on the
secular eyents of the week from a re-
ligious standpoint The subject of his
address was The Approaching Elec-
tions He Siid
ITrom the newspapers of the past few
weeks I am reminded of the fall elections
in nearly all the states and as this
autumn will have much to do with the
nest autumn presidential election there
are some things important to say on the
right and wrong modes of conducting a-
political campaign Of the two styles we
may make our choice
One way is to gather up the scum and
slush and turpitude of the community
into a great reservoir and then let thenf
run down through the appointed aque-
ducts on the candidates presented Take
tne character of the man whom you
dont expect to vote for and find out
who his ancestors were and if any
of them were hanged or imprisoned or
boodlers of public funds Make the son
or grandson now up for office suffer for
it Many of those who are hot against
the theological theory that we suffer for
Adams transgression are glad in polit-
ical life to make the descendant nomin-
ated for office take the consequences for
ancestral delinquencies Never forgive
good Eleazer of Bible times because
wicked Jehosaphat was one of his fore-
fathers A candidate has no business to
have hd a bad grandfather Bring up
the graveyard and array tnose under the
ground against those still above ground
Then marshal all the candidates early
indiscretions and follies and with them
from behind the barricade of the balloc
box fnsilade and bombshell your antag-
onist
Then come on to the later periods of
the candidates life Take his utterances
and put them into a twisting machinr
and turn them this way and that and in-
vert them disjoint them decapitate them
quarter them and crucify them Paint
him black from head to foot Be sure of
beginning with the blacking brush at his
heid and show that he has no brains no
ment3l qualification no acumen no
sound judgment Then put the blacking
brush on his mouth and show that he
cant make a speech or if he does speak
he ssys the wrong thing Then come-
down to his shoulders and paint them
black putting upon them the responsibil-
ity for
THE WRONG DEEbS OF OTHERS
Then paint his heart black showing that
he is cruel and mean and arrogant and
oppressive to the poor Then paint his
pocket black and show that he never
gives anything to help others and that
much of what he has in that pocket he
got dishonestly Then come on down
and paint his knees black showing that
he never prays or is a bigot and only
kneels on his own sectarian footstool
Then come on down and paint his foot
black showing that he has often walked
in forbidden places and that he has often
slipped in morals Then paint his house
black as in the last Presidential election
when both candidates were by infamous
doggerel and caricature and campaign
song assailed for their home life
Then having worn out the blocking
brush on the opposing candidate get a
load of lime dump it at the feet of your
favorite candidate slake it and stir it
and then take your whitewash brush in
hand Whitewash him from head to foot
Cover up all his defects Make him wise
eloquent patrioticefficient Lie as muca
in favor of the man whom you like as you
did against the man whom you dislike
Talking to temperance people make him
out the eternal friend of sobriety
and talking to the beerlov
ing population make him vehement
against sumptuary enactment Say to
those who are in favor of unrestrained
emigration that he is fond cf foreigners
and to those who are opposed to emigra-
tion that he cant bear an Irishman Say
to Kentucky he Is a free trader and to
Pennsylvania he is for high tariff Rep-
resent him when you are near the line be-
tween north and south as believing that
the war is over and there ought to be no
more sectional strife but when you are
up further toward the north star repre-
sent him as in paroxysm of indignation
because Jefferson Daviss hand was the
other day kissed by his soldiers in Geor-
gia The fact is one candidate is by turns
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Have your candidate on a pivot so that
vou can tarn him round this way and that
like Mrs Jarleys wax figures Now
fellowcitizens take my candidate or
suffer the consequences With him pros-
perity good government less taxes and
reform in all departments Eaject him
and misrule depleted treasury poor
wages
BANKRUPTCY AND RUIN
Now having given three times three
for the solid ticket we adjourn for the
polls Have near the polls two or three
ealoons with free drinks If it be against
tbe law to have the front door open on
election day have the backdoor unlocked
or if that also be watched have some
private house where we can
all go for refreshments Yen
cant expect a man to stand from morn-
ing to night in a cold November day with-
out some kind of physical reinforcement
Go out and meet the p eople as they come
to the polls and give them your package
of tickets If they are prepared for
another kind of ballot persuade them of
their folly Beseech them by all they
held dear to pause before they throw the
city or the country into disasters from
which they will never recover If vou are
at the head of a factory
or large commercial establish-
ment tell your employers you do
not want to interfere with their political
sentiments that you have never used
your influence as an employer and never
will use It to decide what your employes
should do but get a spy among your men
to report to you how his comrades vote
and after awhile during the course of the
year let those who voted a different
ticket from that which you prefer drop-
out of their places not knowing what
hurt them
But election day is past I now declare
the polls closed Keep a few of the ballot
boxes late in reporting until yen see
whether it is going to be a close votelf
a close election fix up the returns
Do not for so paltry a thing as one
or two hundred votes let the wrong sher-
iff or mayor or president be elected
Yes that reminds me that I made a mis-
take in one of those returns I put the
figure three where it ought to have been
the figure six Hurry up to headquarters
with that correction A few hours ago it
seemed as if we were about 150 votes
short but now by that correction we are
about 150 votes ahead Huzzahl The
cause is sIq Kindle the tar barrels up
and down the street
LONG LIVE THE DEAR PEOPLE
That is one stylo oi election and it is
very popular and there are thousands of
that kind this autumn
But there will after awhile be another
kind of an election whether in your day
or mine I cannotsaybutit will come
as surely as that this world is to be
Edenized and the crooked made straight
The two candidates will be nominated
not in a dirty grogshop caucus but in a
place where a man can go without being
nauseated by the malodor of whisky
onions cabbage and tobacco Among
all good people in social life
we have now the rule that you
should put the best construction
upon a mans actions and if you can not
say f omething good of him say nothing
at all That rule in the time of which I
speak will be applied to the political
campaign We will take our candidate
and txtol his better qualities We will
have a picture of him in hi3 best mood
and a biography bringing out all the
noble deeds of his life When we speak
of the opposing candidate we will admit
all his excellences but compare the
two men and say our man is the better
Our platform our speeches and our
newspaper columns will have nothing
that sounds or reads like billingsgate or
rancor On election day if the wind
blows from the northeast and we feel
chilly by standing at the polls we will
have hot lemonade or Mocha A man will
be as moral and pure on electioh dj as
he is on sacramental day If nothing is
involved in the election but the question
who shall have che offices instead of
standing in a political meeting harrangu
Ing the audience by the hour upon ques-
tions not at all Involved we will come
out on the platform and frankly say
Gentlemen this is a very important elec-
tion because it decides
THE QUESTION OF LIVELIHOOD
for a great many people There is the
Mavors salary of so many thousand dol-
lars and the District Attorneys salary
of so many thousand and the sheriffs
salaiy of so many thousand and the
Presidents salary of eo many thousand
and we have the great many friends who
are now out of position and these men
now In office have had the emoluments
long enough Now give us a chance
I have myself my eye on an office and
although I am not a candidate on the
ticket now before you I shall get an ap-
pointment under the administration and
that will be of great service for the fact
is I am hard up and I want the law-
ful salary for some good position
Some of these men in office have had the
opportunities not only of supporting
their families but laying up something
for a rainy day Now give us an equal
opportunity I have a lovely wife and
beautiful children and some relativis de-
pendent upon my success and I tell you
plainly that my reason for being on this
platform tonight is not because I am
afraid the American eagle will be shot in
her sublime flight but because I wut
and the presiding officer of this meeting
wants and all the vicepresidents of this
meeting want and the committee who
got up the meeting want and many of
these gentlemen who clap their hands at
the eloquence of the speakers want a
good honest living for hard work done
in the service of the city and country
There will be no hypocrisy in a speech
like that and nothing wrontr If a man
gets 2000 or 5000 or 10000 salary in
the public service it is just as honorable
as though ne got it by selling dry goods
or in daily wages for sawing logB The
ideal electioneering campaign of which
I speak may be far distant but so far as
you and I are concerned we may our-
selves practice it Remember that
AN ELECTION LIE
13 as bad as any other lie that slander in
November is as bad as slander in June
But few men come out of the ordeal of
city statejor national elections as good
as when they went in
But I cannot help sympathizing with
the multitudes of disappointed people at
this time of the year the vast multitude
all over the land who have failed to get
nomination and the vast multitude who
inafewdays will be disappointed by
nonelection For everyposition there
are at least 100 candidates hence of ne-
cessity nlnety iilne applicants are or will
be dlsdprjoidted By an inexorable law
we cannou have more than t six presidents
ma generation What a discouraging
thing to seek the presidency when cut of
the 1 000 who think themselves fit for the
office only five men can get it There is
more probability that any of them will
be struck with lightning than that they
will get to be President The time was
when men so much shrank bsck from the
responsibilities of office they had by pen-
alties to be compelled to take it The
court of Plymouth in 1632 enacted that
whoever should refuse the office Gf Gov-
ernor should psy 20 sterling unless he
should be chosen two years successively
and whoever should refuse the office of
Councillor or Magistrate should pay 10
No more such compulsion is necessary
and the scramble is terrible not-
withstanding ell the peril finan-
cial social moral end eternal
But if ycu have a mission in nublic af-
fairs advance confidently Whatever our
hands find to do in any department of
civic or religious duty let us do it and
that quickly or we will never do it at all
Napoleon said that the Austrians failed
at Rlvoli becausH they did not know the
value of ten minutes I have known men
who at some crisis of life where great
responsibilities converge lost two worlds
earth and heaven because they did not
know the value of one minulev

Democracy Forever
Special to the Gazette
Washington Nov 9 The Democrats
are more than jubilant today In fact
tbe Democracy at the national capital was
on a broad grin ever eincd the glarious
news come over the wire There is every
evidence at the White House of satisfac-
tion at the result of tho election in New
York They have very little to say but
are evidently delighted The President
has received numerous congratulatory
despatces and he saw every caller but
refused to comment on the result Col-
onel Lomont was well pleased bbt did
not cre to talk much for publication
He said however the result is tx
I I
tremely gratifying and of course
do not see how the Republicans can hope
to carry New York now They had many
things to their advantage in this contest
If they were ever going to carry the state
they should have done so this time They
have won nothing since the presidential
election and I dont see how they can
hope for anything from New York In the
future
Senator Voorhees was found at the
Jefferson Club nesaid Its glorious
giorions The result of these elections
means the continued ascendancy
of the Democratic party for
the next twnnty five and per-
haps fifty years and it means
tho renomination of Cleveland unani-
mously and his triumphant election It
also settles Blaine as he will not be a
candidate next year for he is shrewd
enough to see that no Republican can be
elected But down in my heart re-
marked the Senator I feel good over
old Virginia I tell you Cleveland has a
strong hold upon the populace regardless
of party Why every pention of his
name on the stump brought forth the
heartiest applause and the cheers showed
that the Democracy admired him
I anticipated a falling off in
the George vote because I knew
the Irish Democrats would desert him
They are tired of him and of McGlynn
George is now dead Any leader of pol-
itics who loses half his vote in a year is
doomed
Senators Vest and Pngh also called
on the President today and expended
their congratulations He received all
the kindly expressions in a hearty cordial
manner and when the suggestion was
made be waa good for another term he
made no response beyond expressing his
gratification that it was as good as
settled

Senator Vest coincided in that opinion

Senator Pagh was delighted at the re-
sult He thought the vote in New York
showed that the Democrats are united

them The nomination of a son of the

that the Democrats are not to be carried
away from their party and principles

HOW HENRY GEORGE TAKES HIS DEFEAT
New York Nov 9 The headquarters
of the United Labor party were not very
lively last evening At a late hour Henry
George addressed a number of his follow-
ers He said Tonight from the Astoi
house I have seen crowds looking at the
bulletins on which a tremendous victory
was recorded without cheer It reminds
me oi the time when the news of the
battle of Bull Run came when I saw
crowds silently looking at the bulletins
There was a very great victory and there
was not a cheer This is our Bull Run
Applause Every one knows that had
the Union Jorces galned d victory at Bull
publican headquarters great enthusiasm
prevails The members of the Demo-
cratic central committee concede tnatthe
Republicans will have a majority on joint
ballotEND
END OF THE UNION LABOR PARTY
Cincinnati OhioNov 9 The Times
Star iu its summary of the result of the
election in Hamilton county says the total
vote was 64811 which was over 5000 less
than in October 1885 and nearly S000
less then in the presidential vote in lSS4
It was an election of surprises The Re-
publicans were confident of victory but
they really did not anticipate such an
overwhelming victory The fact that
Foraker leads Powell in this county by
nearly 7000 votes in spite of the trade be-
tween the Democratic and Union Libor
men speaks volumes The Union Libor
party instead of closely pressing the Re-
publicans or defeating them as predict-
ed lags from 15000 to 19000 behind
them and en average of 5000 benind the
Democrats This is the end of the Uaion
Lihor party
