Day by Day by Betty Bazar
Kaelan goes to a day care program at our church two days a week,
and he really loves it. He likes the kids and the teachers and has a 5
generally good time; in addition, it gives me a little break to run er-
rands and such. The other day, however, he decided for reasons of
his own that he did not want to go that particular day. He told me
from the time we started backing out of the drive that he did not want
to go; he wanted to go'to my house. I had noticed that he didn’t act as
if he felt really well; allergies seemed to be bothering him. However,
I hated for him to miss when he wasn’t really sick, and so I took him
mi and talked to him all the way to the church. I told him how much
everyone would miss him and how disappointed they would be. He was unmoved and
adamant that he did not want to go that day. As we pulled into the parking lot of the church,
his cries became particularly plaintive.
I finally said, “Kaelan, Mam-ma needs to take a check in anyway. Why don’t you just
walk with me?” I was hoping that once he got inside and saw the kids, he would want to
stay and play.
“Will you not leave me?” came his pitiful question to me.
“No, Kaelan,” I assured him. “I won’t leave you if you don’t want to stay, but you might
decide to stay.”
“No, I don’t want to stay,” he insisted.
We got out and walked into the building with him hanging close and holding on to me.
We went inside where the teachers and kids were busy; Kaelan hung back and kind of
behind me. I went into the room and gave them the check and explained what was happen-
ing. Meantime, Kaelan headed for the door.
“Kaelan, you don’t want to stay for awhile?” I asked. The answer was “no.” His teachers
tried to talk to him and convince him, but we all got nowhere. Meanwhile, a fierce debate
was going on in my head.
Should I make him stay and tough it out? Was I waffling in to a toddler’s demands by
taking him with me? Was I setting a precedent for future behavior? I listened to his
mournful cries, felt the pressure of his arms around my neck, and felt the tears on my
shoulder. I didn’t want to teach him that he could bail out of things whenever he chose to,
but I didn’t want to go back on my word to him either. I had promised him that I would not
leave him if he didn’t want to stay. He had trusted me; if I left him anyway, would he trust
me again? I agonized for a few minutes; I wanted to do the right thing for him. Were his
cries the cries of a little boy who just wanted his way or of a little boy who really felt the
need for some reason to be with a parent or grandparent? I listened carefully and decided
his cries were of the latter type so I took him with me. I followed my heart, as all the while
my head was really questioning me. As the morning wore on and I saw an increasingly
sleepy little boy who just didn’t feel quite up to par, 1 knew I had done th£ right thing. You
know, when I was a young mother, I listened to my head and the advice of others a lot; now
that I am older, I have learned to trust my heart.
