Cuero art at fest
For the last 41 years, George
Boutwell has been touring
Texas showing his art and
looking for interesting things
to paint.
George will be showing his
work at Turkeyfest from 6 p.m.
to midnight on Friday, Oct. 11,
from noon to midnight on
Saturday, Oct. 12 and from
noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday,
Oct. 13. He will also be signing
his recently released book
“Texas in my Windshield,” an
autobiography and a series of
short stories and 182 paint-
ings that document 40 years
of exploring Texas and attend-
ing over 2,000 art shows.
George was inspired with
the diversity of Texas when he
was art director of “Texas
Highway’s” magazine from
1966 to 1972.
In 1986, he got the idea to
produce a calendar featuring
his artwork and publish it
himself. The calendar has be-
come popular because it
changes themes every year
and portrays a different as-
pect of Texas.
His 2012 calendar features
famous trees that all have a
story from the days of the Re-
public of Texas and the Texas
Revolution Era.
Every other year, George
produces a calendar that has a
vanishing 50s culture theme.
His 2011 calendar had paint-
ings of classic motels. George
has produced over 100 paint-
ings depicting the vanishing
1950s culture including two
from Cuero and will have
prints of them available at his
show.
George will be producing
“Classic Cafe’s of Texas” calen-
dar for 2013 featuring old
cafes that are at least 50 years
old and still have their vintage
look.
George became aware that
much of the culture of the
1950s was rapidly vanishing.
George has embarked on a
quest to chronicle this fading
era that he had lived through,
with the gas stations, drive
inns, motels, dance halls and
the other icons of the disap-
pearing culture.
In 2005 George was chosen
by the Texas State Legislature
and the Texas Commission on
the Arts to be the 2006 Texas
State Artist in the Category of
Two Dimensional Art.
George will bring a selection
of his original watercolors and
prints of his work to the show
as well as copies of his previ-
ous calendars.
