Richard Kott, who ranches
south of Comfort, deferred a
pasture last year for several
months. This pasture made a
very good recovery. Kott was
well pleased with the results of
this deferment and is now defer-
ring another pasture, which he
plans to continue deferring un-
til summer of this year.

Walter and Danny Jung, a
father and son team, ranching
in the divide country northeast
of Comfort, have found that
patience has its rewards. In
the spring of 1954, Walter and
Danny seeded King Ranch blue-
stem in the upper part of an old
field. This was Class VII land
and needed a permanent vegeta-
tion. Manure was applied soon
after seeding and the results
were discouraging to say the
least. In the entire three acres,
not mare than a dozen plants
were found at the end of the
first year. Spring of 1955
brought very little improvement
in the stand. Then in the sum-
mer of 1955, some good rains
fell on the area and the King
Ranch began to germinate and
take hold after lying dormant
for over a year. By last fall,
there was a good stand over the
whole plot. This' plot, though
small, will supply seed for re-
seeding other areas on the ranch
and at the same time provide
provide sofrie supplemental graz-
ing.
With the seasonable rains last
summer, Walter and Danny saw
the opportunity to remove all
stock from one pasture and re-
duced the number of sock in a-
nother pasture. The pasture rest
ed for six months last year and
as a result, provided some good
winter forage. Stock wintered in
this pasture on very little extra
feed and Danny said there were
many times that they would not
even come up for feed and cake.

“Guar”
Guar is a summer legume that
is becoming very popular in our
District. Guar as well as sweet-
clover should become a part of
every farmer’s cropping sys-
tem. It is a drought and root rot
resistant crop that can be plant-
ed from March 15 through July.
With fair moisture conditions,
it can be planted on grain stub-
ble land. It should be planted in
rows at a rate of 4 to 6 pounds
per acre and about 3 inches
deep. Although one of our main
needs is for soil improvement,
the beans do furnish a high pro-
tein feed or can be used as a
cash crop for milling purposes.
Since guar is a legume, inocu-
lation of seed is necessary be-
fore planting to get nodule
growth. It takes a special guar
inoculant. Guar also does, better
when phosphate fertilizer is
used.

Do-lt-Whose-Self?
Judge Carl Chamberlain was
very agreeably surprised Satur-
day, when his son Jack whom
he had not seen in twefity six
years, flew in from Hawthorne,
Nevada for a weekend visit. He
returned home. Saturday after-
noon.
Monk McCarthy’s almost as
good at publicity stunts as he is
at servicing and repairing cars—
which is pretty darned good.
His latest gimmick is a hand-
bill titled: “Do-It-Yourselfers !
Why Not Grease Your Own Car?”
Then he follows with two
paragraphs about all the greases
you’ll need-the full set of
wrenches, spray gun, grease guh,
four jacks—the ability to work
flat on your back with a face full
of goo. And at the very end
there’s this line: “Or, if that’s
too much trouble, we’ll do the job
for 75<f ”
From where I sit, I’ll have, to
admit Monk’s schemes attract
attention. They often seem far-
fetched to me, but he and I al-
ways had different opinions on
how to run a business—just as
we have different opinions about
what’s the best beverage. He
likes hot tea—I prefer a glass of
beer —which doesn’t keep us
from having a “smooth-running”
friendship.
St. Peter’s Altar Society will
meet Tuesday, March 6, at 2 p.
m. in the Parish Hall. All mem-
bers are urged to attend. New
members will be welcome.
Harold Sosa Jewelry and
Watch Repairing Shop will be
closed Monday, March 5th. It
will be open again March 12th.
