deputized by him for certain

He attended Flour Bluff High
School and is a pilot and a
SCUBA diver Appleby has
done rescue work with the
Coast Guard and has assisted
them in their divers school
He has attended a number of
law enforcement schools
conducted by the FBI and other
organizations including
several at Del Mar
Appleby and his wife, Joyce,
have three boys. Ricky, 17;
Randy. 12; and Donald W. Jr ,

Twirling Champ
Y ears Of Award-Winning Success
To achieve *(si awards in a
lifetime is an almost unheard
of accomplishment
But. for a graduating senior
at Gregory Portland High
School if is an accomplished
fact
Robyn Poling has been
twirling 10 years and during
this lime has accumulated 8M)
awards as proof to her out
standing capabilities with the
baton
She is the daughter of Mr
and Mrs Edwin R Poling. 110
Markham Place, and has been
the twirling student of Frances
Malek of Robstown during her
entire twirling career
Robyn is the 1972 American
Athletic Union National
Champion in both solo and two
baton
In 1971, she was the first
person ever to win three United
Slates Twirling Association
state championships, in solo,
two baton and strut Robyn
also was 1972 USTA slate
champion in solo
She has gone lo the- USTA
national competition for five
years and has placed each year
in the top seven And there are
some I .utxi contestants from all
over the United States at these
highly competitive contests,
Robyn I'ist year was listed by
USTA as one of the top five
twirlers in the country
"But," says Robyn, "I have
retired from solo From now on
il is going to be two baton only
I want to concentrate on
winning the two baton national
championship at Milwaukee
this summer ”
She has a four year
scholarship to the University of
Houston where she will be the
featured twirler of the Cougar
Band She has appeared with
the band on television as part
of a UH Cincinnati basketball
game
Robyn's ambitions-’ "I hope
lo be a physical education
teacher and to do twirling
instruction on the side." she
said
What has been her greatest
moment of success in her short
but fantastic career1 “It was
when I first began." she said.
"I beat another twirler who I
thought was the best twirler
that I had ever seen "
"But. the greatest in-
spiration which has made this
all possible for me," Robyn
said. “ has been the en-
couragement and help I have
received from my mother She
has been with me at every
lesson and at every practice
period the entire time."
With thoughts like that, you
can't help but being a bom

Last Tuesday night the 1972
1972 Wildcat Band presented
its final concert
For the 31 senior members of
the band, it was an especially
significant performance, the
concert marked the last time
that they would ever perform
with the band In honor of this
occasion. Mr Vaniandinghatn
presented to the audience the
seniors and their parents

On Thursday, May 24, the
Wildcat Band will hold its
election of officers for the
coming year That evening the
band will have its annual end
of the-year swimming party at
the H E B Community Pool
Next week the freshman,
sophomore and junior mem
bers of the hand will audition
for their chair placements in
next year's band Drum major
and twirler tryouts will be held
next week also
$250 El Paso has promised
more when and if their
operations here go through
Mrs G C. Farrier and
Abernathy Bates, building and
equipment committee
chairman, slate that it will
probably take $10,000 to
completely equip the new
building for full service to the
community
