Shirt Band and the Elsie Crabtree of the Falfurrias marching corps,
who will lead the local group in the state music festival in Corpus
Christi Friday and Saturday of this week. The band, with 82 members,
will be one of the largest bands attending the meet. This is the first
time in three years that the band has entered state competition. The
organization, which is entered in Class C. concert and marching events,
will have 14 soloists and five ensembles participating in the contest in
addition to full band numbers.

pany of Texas No. 1 Rodriguez,
three-fourthg of a mile from the
discovery well of the Sejita Field,
was shut d"Wn for orders, a new
location in the area several miles
west of the townsite was reported
this week.
The No. 1 Rodriguez, bottomed
it 6>38 feet, perforated in the
5,400-foot zone and then was shut
down for orders. Tubing was run
and the well cleaned.

School auditorium Tuesday, March
19, beginning at 8:00 p. m., accord-
j ing to an announcement released
this week by Mrs. Lewis Sheiness,
president of the local organization
The Alice presentation will be
under the active sponsorship of
Mrs. Orville H. Moyer of that city.
The Falfurrias portion of the pro-
ceeds will benefit the Falfurrias
High School band Instrument
fund while the Alice portion will
be added to a fund for the build-
ing of a cancer elinic at some
point in this area.
Invitations were sent out this
week to more than 100 South Tex-

the events. According to informa-
tion released by Bandmaster Hoff-
man will enter 14 soloists, 4 ensem-
ble numbers, the sight-reading
contest, the concert contest, and
the marching contest.
Frank Hopper, a senior, is cap-
tain of the Falfurrias Green Shirt
Band. The four sergeants are Lar-
ry Casey, Bob Hassell, David
Grimes, and Franklin Orth. Jus-
tine Miller is drum major.
Si lo and ensemble events, in-
cluding the twirling contests, are
expected to be run off Friday. Fri-
day night a student directing con-
test will i>e held with A&I College
Band acting as the play band.
The Falfurrias band, which is
in Class C, will probably have
some 25 bands in competition.
Band and orchestra classes will
I compete Saturday, March 16.
Saturday afternoon at 4 30 an 8-
j block street parade will be staged
in the downtown section of Corpus
Christi by all the bands entered in
j the tw> -day contest.
| Final event of the regional con-
| test will be that of the marching
bands which is scheduled for 7:30
at the College-Academy Field, af-
ter which there will be the pres-
entation of awards.

Campaign To Safeguard The
Public Health And Elimin-
ate Enormous Waste By
RatsUnder Bureau Direction
Final instructions on a rodent
control campaign, now underway
in Brooks, Cameron. Hidalgo. Ken-
edy, Kleberg and Willacy counties,
were received here this week from
W L. Little Jr., district field asslt-
ant, Bureau of Biological Survey,
R. T Talley Jr., district agent, and
cooperating with the Livestock
Sanitary Commsslon of Texas and
the Texas Agrcultural and Meoh-
ancal College.
Details of the campaign were
made public here by R. L. Schultz,
president and secretary of the Fal-
furrias Chamber of Commerce,
which is cooperating in the drive.
The purpose «.f this campaign is
to reduce the alarming spread of
typhus fever, which is conveyed to
human beings by fleas from in-
fected rats An increasingly large
number of eases of this disease
were reported in these counties
last year and more adequate
measures are required to safe-
guard the public health. Other
diseases involved in the campaign
plans are bubonic plague, rabies
infantile paralysis, tularemia, in-
fectous jaundice, food poisoning
bacteria, trichinosis, rat bite fev-
er and other maladies spread by
rats.
The campaign is also designed
to reduce the economic loss caused
by rats, mice, rabbits, ground
squirrels and pocket gophers in
this South Texas area. The aver-
age cost per year of each rat and
pocket gopher for food eaten and
damage done is estimated at $2.00.
The county land use planning
committee is sp. nsoring the cam-
uaign on a county-wide basis, and
the Bureau of Biological Survey
and tiie Extension Service ul A. it
M College are cooperating in the
direction of the plan. Many civic
organizations in the area includ-
ing chambers of commerce, are
joining the campaign.

This annual spring event, spon-
sored for the past several years by
the Civic Club,, Is open to all
youngsters of the community. The
only requirement Is that each
child’s parent or guardian furnish
•me dozen or more dyed eggs. The
name of the child giving the eggs
should be written on the contain-
er to avoid confusion, and all eggs
must be brought to the home of
Mrs. Johivon by noon on Easter
Sunday.

missioner, was a Falfurrias visitor
Friday, March 8 while on a land
inspection and business trip
through South Texas, during
which he is taking up land office
matters with numerous land own-
ers, particularly where he can save
them the expense of making a trip
to Austin, or where his personal
inspection is needed.
Commissioner Oiles, according
to reports from political observers,
seeks re-election to his second
term this year i.n the strength of
his numerous achievements to
benefit Texas public schools and
land owners.
