however the proof of his defalcation be-
came more conclusive and the Idea was
suggested that Mr Nichols hud committed

After a diligent search for light 11 was
learned that the deceased teller had on
tho morning of tho 17th about a half
hour previous to his death pur-
chased from the drug stoio of T W
Iovvell on Houston street a bottle con
tulnlng oho draclim of strychnine enough
to kill twenty miii This was one link
In the chain of evidence supporting the
theory of sulcldea nd It was supplemented
by the statement of Dr Hurts that the i
symptoms of Mr Nichols ut the time of
Ids deathwere Such lis to Indicate that
he had died frOm the effects of strych-
nine A post mortem examination was
talked of but nono was ever held Tho
general opinion was that It was a suicide
amino post mortem examination Was nec-
essary When it became an established
fact that John Nichols hud died by his
own hand those who had unbounded
eontldcnco in him began to have doubts
of the Integrity of his character

Still there were men w ho believed that
he was an honest man up to tho dnv of
Ids death and did not like to listen to re-
ports derogatory to his good name This
belief however was dispelled when tho
fact was published that during the
months of January and February Nichols
had conveyed to his wife large blocks of
city piOperty This was the straw that
broke the camels back and the memory
of John Nichols a man who once stood
so well went down under a cloud He
was pitied and his heartbroken wife
sympathUod with but this could not
bring back his once good name and thus
it was that John Nichols passed from this
world u defaulter and a suicide
