M-D CUT-IN CONNECTION
FOR SEWERS
!
—PATENT PENDING—
The M-D cut-in connection for sewers is a light cast
iron fitting, with bell and spigot ends, for connecting a
house service with a main sewer pipe without the neces-
sity of placing a Y-branch or T-branch in the sewer line.
The M-D cut-in connection is made for use with both
terra cotta and concrete pipe sewers of all sizes, and for
house services of either terra cotta or cast iron pipe of
the various diameters usually required.
In making use of M-D cut-in connections a hole of the proper size is cut in the sewer pipe
at the required vertical angle, the spigot end of the fitting inserted, a small amount of jute packed
in the space between the spigot of the fitting and the rim of the hole in the sewer pipe, and then
the cut-in fitting is held rigidly in place by surrounding the outside of the fitting, as far as the
base of the bell, and the sewer pipe itself for a short distance on each side of the fitting, with lean
concrete or cement mortar applied with a trowel. There is a bead on the spigot end of the cut-in
fitting which prevents the jute or concrete from entering the sewer pipe, and the stops or wings
on the side of the fitting allow the spigot end to enter the sewer pipe only so far as to be flush
with the inner surface of the sewer and thus provide no obstruction to the flow of sewage. The
spigot end of the cut-in fittings of the several sizes and types are so shaped as to fit neatly the
inside surface of sewer pipes of the various diameters.
Each M-D cut-in connection is plainly marked with a numeral or numerals indicating the
size or sizes cf sewer on which it is to be used.
The bells of M-D cut-in connections to be used with terra cotta house services are of such
sizes as to give ample space for jointing materials. Bells of M-D cut-in connections for use with
cast iron pipe house services are so shaped as to insure the proper centering of either cast iron
water pipe or cast iron soil pipe and of sufficient size to allow any type of joint to be made.
The accompanying diagrams and cuts show the M-D cut-in connection and the method em-
ployed in placing it.
The process of cutting a sewer pipe, inserting the cut-in connection and placing the sur-
rounding concrete is extremely simple, rapid and economical. Over 300 of these cut-in connec-
tions have been used within the past six months by the Washington Suburban Sanitary District
under the direction of Robert B. Morse, Chief Engineer, and H. Roland Devilbiss, Department En-
gineer of Construction, the inventors of the device, with much greater economy and with much
better results obtained than possible to secure through cutting in Y-branches or T-branches as had
been previously the practice.
The only tools necessary in using M-D cut-in connections are a small cold chisel, ball peening
hammer, a juting iron and a trowel. The spigot end of the cut-in fitting is applied to the outside
of the sewer pipe at the required vertical angle and with the stops or wings along the axis of the
sewer. The outside of the sewer pipe is then marked by drawing a piece of chalk around the out-
side of the bead on the spigot of the fitting. The cut-in fitting is then removed and the sewer
pipe is lightly scored along the chalk line by using the cold chisel. A small opening is then brok-
en in the sewer pipe at the center of the scored circle, by lightly tapping with the ball point of the
peening hammer. After this hole is broken it is gradually enlarged by breaking away small pie-
ces from the opening until the sides of the hole coincide with the scoring. The cut-in fitting is
