Cooper Review - Page 3A
Charleston and Lake Creek News
By Vicki Vasco
We sure did have a nice
rain Saturday afternoon and
Saturday evening. Ricky said
that we got about an inch in
Cleveland.
The Lamar/Delta Retired
Teachers and SchoolEmployees
Assoc, met Monday in the
Paris Jr. College Ballroom
for lunch and a business
meeting. The different School
Superintendents from the area
talked about their schools. After
lunch Mike Long voiced the
invocation, and Marc Whitney
led the pledges to the flags. We
sang “God Bless America.” We
now have 485 members in the
organization. The next meeting
will be Monday, Oct. 28, at 11
a.m. We got our new yearbooks
Monday.
th
Julie Kay Swaim’s 7111 grade
volleyball team from the
Chi sum Middle School went
to DeKalb to play volleyball.
Chi sum won that game. Katie
Malone, Julie and Destin went
to see that game. Jalie did a good
job. The Chisum J.V. football
team played Thursday evening.
Chisum did a good job, even
though Cooper won that game
6 to 0. Both teams did really
well. The whole family went
to see that game. The Rev. Jake
Vaughn was the announcer
for that game. Cooper I.S.D.
really does have a nice football
facility. Cooper’s senior class
was selling snow cones to help
on the senior foundation for
scholarships.
The time the K.K.K. had
a service at the Charleston
Cemetery right after a funeral
(Aunt Ali Fae was a little girl.
She is now 92 years old, and
she was about 4 at the time.)
The year was about 1924 or
1925. She and Grandmother
Maggie George had been to
the Cemetery to a funeral. She
doesn’t remember whose. They
were walking back home after
the funeral, and they stopped
at the house across from the
cemetery, the old house that
belonged to Bill and Ada Oliver
and were standing out in the
yard talking to the people who
lived there at the time. They
were all standing out in the
yard when men in long white
robes and tall white pointed
hoods came marching across
the cemetery from the north.
They marched to the grave of
the person who had just been
buried and had their service
right beside the grave. They
knew who one of the people
was because his little dog
was following him. I suppose
this was the last service that
the “clan” had in Charleston
because I never heard about
another one. Grandmother and
Grandfather George lived in
the old two-story George house
where S.R. George’s house
now stands.
The Daughters of the Republic
of Texas met Saturday, Sept 28,
at the Paris Golf and Country
Club in Paris. Seven attended
that meeting. Glenda Wise, our
new president, was the speaker.
She talked about famous Texas
Women.
The Chisum Youth Football
was Saturday, Sept. 28. Dawson
Hamner played for the team.
He did a good job.
Don was watching the Texas
Rangers play Saturday. The
announcer announced that it
was Mable Wheat’s of Cooper’s
92n^ birthday and that she was
watching the game. She always
watches the Ranger games. Aunt
Ali Fae Wright of Weslaco was
watching the game when the
announcement was made. The
Rangers won that game. Julie
Kennemer went to that game
with Janet and her husband and
their daughter and some others.
They had good seats right on
the front and got on television
several times. They all had a
good time.
Brenda Stewart and her family
were going to the Dallas Fair
after Church Sunday.

Don’t forget!! This Saturday,
October 5th, the ladies of New
Life Baptist Church are hosting
an open house for Patricia
Blundell at her new home in
Klondike. All her family and
friends are invited. There will
be refreshments served and
a money tree in place to help
with the things that new houses
always need.
Cindy Anderson had a little
more time at home this weekend
and got to watch both Montana
and Hunter play football. Gary
will be with the band from
Three Rusty Nails as they play
at the Shiloh Gathering on
Horton Road Friday Oct. 4th
at 5 p.m.
George and Pearl Foster
had about 1 1/2 inches of rain
this weekend while they were
attending a family reunion in
Enloe. It was well attended
and they had a good time
visiting with everyone. They
especially enjoyed watching
all the little ones there.
Patricia Blundell also
attended a family reunion on
Saturday. The Preas family
met at Charleston. While she
was that near, Patricia visited
with Tina and Jimmy Ray
Love in Kensing. After church
on Sunday, Patricia visited
with Alice and Frank Moore.
She also heard from daughter
Rebecca by phone.
Billy Martin, Cassie Bunn
and Brionna Davis also attended
the Preas family reunion on
Saturday.
Faye Robnett had some good
news last week. She “passed”
her five year mark after cancer
so now she only has to have one
check-up per year instead of
two!! Congratulations! Sadly
Jerry had some bad news. His
aunt passed away Friday in
West Texas following a stroke.
She was only one month from
celebrating her 101st birthday.
Please remember this family in
your prayers during their time
of loss.
Mabel Wheat had a great
birthday on Saturday. Hershal
and Bennie were here to help
her celebrate her 92nd birthday.
They were watching the
Rangers play and Mabel heard
the announcer read birthday
greetings to her!! Jerrell
joined them for lunch of sub
sandwiches and cake. Mabel
had BJ and her twin sons and
her daughter bring a beautiful
stand with a chrysanthemum
plant. She also had birthday
greetings from Marion Miller,
Laney Rainey from Commerce,
and her granddaughter,
grandson, and great-grandson.
Congratulations to you, Mabel!
Wanda Helms and her family
celebrated Nash’s birthday
on Sunday (it actually WAS
his birthday, too) with lunch
followed by a game of Train.
A group from the family
attended the Bois d’ Arc Bash
in Commerce on Saturday.
Trina and Wanda went to Mark
and Lisa’s home on Friday for
a wiener roast by the pool.
Landon and Trina played while
Adelyn ate bean dip - using
her small fingers as chips! But
Fin told that the S’mores was
even more impressive!
Janet and Jerry Currin went
to Quinlan Saturday for a baby
shower for Jason and Jennifer.
Jason’s bosses and lots of their
friends were there along with
Rodney and Heather, Jerry and
Janet and Jerry Wood, Jerry
Currin’s sister Carol, niece
Dena Wood and her daughter
Erica, and Michelle Wood.
Jerry made his pulled pork
barbecue and had none left to
bring home!
Misty and Larry George got
back Sunday evening from a
trip to Gladewater. They were
there to help Larry’s niece
celebrate her 8th birthday.
Travis was in from Tulsa and
went with them, too.
Tuesday, yhe ladies at
New Life made desserts for
the monthly birthday party
at Birchwood Manor. The
church also furnished the ice
cream. Maggie Thomas and
Glovon Collard delivered the
“goodies” and helped serve.
On Thursday evening, Earl’s
sister, Nancy, Aunt Leatha
Mae and Debbie Drake from
Paris came for dinner. They
were celebrating Nancy’s
birthday. Randy had lunch
with Maggie on Friday and
helped eat the leftovers. Chad
Ferrell brought the message
Sunday morning at New Life.
His message was on “In Christ
Alone.” After the message,
Chad gave his testimony. He
thought he had given his life
to Christ, but realized that his
life wasn’t much different than
before. He then realized that it
is only “In Christ Alone” that
we are truly changed into the
“new man” mentioned in 1
Cor.5:ll. So, now Chad bears
witness by his life and his
service of the “new creation”
we can be “In Christ Alone”.
Sunday evening, Maggie
attended services at New Hope
with Ethel and heard Pastor
Eudy’s message from Romans
12:1 on renewing your mind.
There also was a traditional
hymn singing with a testimony
after each song. They closed
services with everyone holding
hands and singing “When We
All Get To Heaven.”

Pickering was the Children’s
Time Leader. The Candle
Lighters were Journi Ingram
and Kaylee Davis. The Ushers
were Jack Murray, Journi
Ingram, Kelci Sonntag, the
two little Anderson girls and
Sutton Killian. Ronnie Morgan
talked to us about the Hope
House in Cooper. Annell Oats,
Dolores Jackson, and Helen
Anderson sang several songs.
Helen played the old Aldridge
piano while they sang. It was
beautiful. They sang “What
A Day,” “Just A Closer
Walk With Thee, “The Nail
Scarred Hand,” and “He
Touched Me.” The songs
were beautiful. After church
there was a dinner in the
Fellowship Hall—Beans and
Cornbread. Gary’s sermon
was titled “Celebrate the
Temporary.”
I got a very nice thank-you
note from Mrs. Melba Jones
for attending her birthday
party last Sunday.
Have a good week!
