them know their eyes are strained; others do
not. But even those who know neglect it. In

“We know- about the free-
dom of education in Mexico
under Mr. Calles. Thousands
of schools have been violently
closed for the only crime that
they tried to teach with the
three R’s some elements of
morality and Christianity. All
this while the government is
doing absolutely nothing for
the education <ff the masses.
There is no doubt about it and
the blindest can see that we
have at our doors a duplicate
of Russia; the same ideas, the
same principles, the same
methods. We refuse to recog-
nize Soviet Russia. How can
Uncle Sam recognize Soviet
Mexico? How can we explain
the presence of an American
ambassador among the Bolshe-
vists of the neighboring repub-
lic? Mexico as it is at present
rule is a sore spot and a degen-
erate spot in the Western Hem-
isphere and we will do well to
watch the future developments
of this dangerous growth.”

Lake N. Porter, of Falfurrias
got out his old fiddle that had
lain idle for years, dusted off
the cobwebs, patched up the
broken strings and quietly
slipped away to San ‘Tone to
fiddle a little. (
Over the radio Mr. Porter
sent out the notes of ‘Warhoop’
and ‘Shakespeare’. After play-'
ing he went down to a ten cent
picture show and forgot all
about the contest until next 1
day when letters and telegrams
and postal cards began to
pour into the Fiddle Editor on
the Light all voting for Lake,
N. Porter as being the best and
sweetest fiddler.
And still the telegrams pour
in. Up to press time, more]
than 125 telegrams have been
sent over the Western Union by
Falfurrians voting for Porter.
Many cards and letters have
also gone.
In speaking of the contest
the San Antonio Light says:
“Until Saturday noon the
Old Fiddler’s Editor will keep
on counting the votes as they
oour in over his desk in the
battle to decide the winner of
the great Southwest Champion-
ship program over WCAR last
Saturday night.
“Lake N. Porter, of Falfur-
rias, jumped into the lead
Tuesday when telegrams and
letters began to pour in from
all over Texas.
“Bob Skiles, of Laredo,

Bickett promised his whole-
hearted co-operation in push-
ing the work of completing
the highway between San An-
tonio and Brownsville so that
traffic will encounter no bad
stretches in the road after
fall. The commissioner said
that he would do all in his pow-
er to get the work done before
next winter.
Three stretches remain in
the highway to San Antonio
that need hard surfacing and
pressure will be brought to
bear to have these bad places
mended at once. One of these
