MAIL COMPENSATION IS ALREADY TOO HIGH
Statistics of the Past Two Years Show that the Ship-
Building Industry Does Not Need Any
Special Assistance
Washington March 15 Senator Berry
representing the minority of the senate
committee on commerce today presented
the report lu opposition to the pending ship
subsidy bill Most of the points have been
covered In speeches lu the eennte The
minority deny the accuracy of the predic-
tions nnd facts of the majority They urgo
that the bill Is wrong In principle and de
dare that it will utterly fall In the ac-
complishment of Its professed object They
also say that while It Is not so complicated
as the subsidy bill of the Flftyalith con
giess It Is In some respects even more ob
objectionable
The minority continue The bill pro
po es to tax the whole people to the ex
ten of several mllllous for the benefit of
ono single Industry besides the statistics
of the Ust two years prove that the ship
building Industry dons not need such special
assist ince but Is rapidly Increasing under
natural conditions
The criticise the feature of the bill
which carries the subsidy for foreign mails
vessels already tfig t is mnfle Immense-
ly higher by the bill
They further urge that the bill makes no
provision against n shipping trust and
claim that It encourages n combination
leading to such a truat
Tbcy also my The lines might nlSrS
merge Willi foreign lluo to control freight
nnd passenger rates Thereby our ubtIy
