Salinas
In Trainee
Program
David Salinas is one of only
85 school personnel selected
throughout Texas to par-
ticipate in the administrative
trainee program at Stephen F
Austin Stale University.
Nacogdoches, this summer
Salinas, a Spanish teacher at
Gregory-Portiand High School
was chosen from over 200
applicants At the program's
completion, he will receive his
master of education degree
and temporary administrative
certificate
The trainee program is
sponsored by the Texas Center
for the Development of Human
Resources The center en-
courages minorities and
women to enter leadership
positions in the educational
system to solve problems
related to race and sex
discriminations Today, there
are few minorities and women
in Texas is such positions But
it is the quality of ad-
ministrators that the center
stresses, not the race or sex
A lack of communication
hetween the school and the
home, especially among
minorities, was cited by
Salinas as one of the greatest
problems facing educators
today As a bilingual teacher
versed in multi-cultural
education. Salinas believes he
would he able to deal more
effectively with this problem of
communication and the
problem of discrimination
Salinas, who has been
leaching for 15 years, will
i complete 12 hours of ad-
ministrative courses this
summer Twelve “packaged”
hours will be completed during
the fall and spring when he
resumes teaching Next
summer he returns to SFASU
to finish (he final 12 hours •
needed for his master’s degree
and certification He then will
lack only nine hours for the
mid management cer-
tification
