Thought For Today
In other days we were admon-
ished “In times of peace pre-
pare for war.” Now the insistent
admonition is “In time of war
prepare for peace.” Let us hope
that what we lost by refusing
to heed the old admonition we
shall gain in practicing the new.
A college president offers the
suggestion that 100,000 of the
most capable young men of Am-
erica be selected for intensified
training in our universities to
fit them for leadership in recon-
structing the world for peace
after the war. Good enough, as
.far as it goes, but are we certain
that the older leaders are qual-
ified to teach real democratic
government? We have had too
much teaching in some of our
leading universities that smacks
more of Socialism or Nazism
than it does of democracy.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 26 (U.R)—
Col. Lewis Sanders, director of

j | itary affairs committed today that
I I 90 per cent of the manpower prob-
I . lem can be handled under present
j laws and that new legislation will
i not be necessary until “sometime
i next year.”
j Sanders, testifying in connec-
i tion with pending manpower-

j sory manpower legislation—which
j WMC Director Paul V. McNutt re-N

j tually was not necessary.”
| “Not exactly,” Sanders replied,

new legisuation, but it should not
be enacted until appropriate ma-
chinery is set up.”

Lieut. Commander V.F. Tydlac-
ka. in charge of Fort Worth area
recruiting, announced today that
hereafter no one will be accepted
for enlistment in the Coast
Guard after receiving notice
from his selective service board to
appear for induction into the
army.
The new order is expected to
curtail drastically the last-min-
ute “shopping” for a particular
branch .of the service which has
characterized recruiting for the
last several months—and, inci-
dentally, added many a gray hair
to the heads of draft board mem-
bers trying to fill their quotas.
However, enlistments in the
Coast Guard will continue at full
capacity for all men whose induc-
tion date has not been set. Ap-
plicants should first obtain a re-
lease from their draft board, then
write or visit the offices in For*
Worth, San Antonio, Wichita
Falls, Amarillo. Dallas and Wa-
co.
