Course Scheduled
A well known defensive driving course will be given here
Aug 18 and 19. according to pluns announced this week by It
I. Albritlenof the Gregory Portland chapter of the American
Association of Retired Persons
Knrollment in .the course will not be limited to AARP
members. Albritten said However, the size of the class is
limited to 35 persons
Films and textbooks used in the course were prepared by
the National Safety Council Fxperienced instructors will
present the course at First Presbyterian Church
Classes will be held for two afternoons and upon com
pletion certificates will tie awurded by the National Safety
Council

discussion, during which
Zapata moved that the
requested increase be denied
(the motion died for want of a
second) Commissioner Charlie
Spiekerman moved, with Pat
Kindel seconding, that Kiker
be granted an increase to $600
per month Zapata and Dorris
abstained in the subsequent
vote, with Spiekerman and
Kindel voting approval, and
County Judge Hartman voting
no Kiker will get the raise
following a hearing July 11 A
public hearing is necessary
before increases in salaries
can be granted an elected
official.
Raul Gonzales. Justice of the
Peace in Precinct 1, again
requested an increase in pay
from $821 to $972 per month,
and was again refused Also
refused increases were em-
ployees of the snack bar
Car allowance of $150
monthly was granted John
Davilla of the Texas Em-
ployment Office, and the court
also agreed to install a
telephone in that office when it
is relocated in the newly
purchased Plymouth Oil
building Assistant County
Auditor George Hernundez was
also granted an additional $100
per month car allowance
Hernandez was currently
drawing $100 monthly
The court also issued cer-
tificates of indebtedness in the
amount of $141,000 covering the
purchase of the Plymouth Oil
Company building, which will
lie converted to use as a county
building The certificates are
for a 15-year period The
county hopes to take over the
building around July 1.
The court also discussed at
semr length the possibility of
hiring an assistant county
engineer (to be included in the
new budget). However,
following the discussion, no
action was taken and the
matter was tabled for further
study
At the recommendation of
Commissioner Zapata, the
court appointed Mrs Calixtro
Garcia, of Taft, to the child
Welfare Board The court also
approved requests for new
employment for several Title
II and Title VI slots, as well as
for Elizabeth Spacek as court
reporter. 36th Judicial District
Court.
In other action, the com-
missioners authorized transfer
of funds from one department
to another; gave approval to
payment of service agreement
tor a copier in the printing
department; okayed naming a
street in Mathis Stage Coach
l-ane; and agreed to pay the
usual $50 fee for a court ap
pointed attorney instead of the
$100 requested
The court also presented a
certificate of appreciation to
Claude Kichblatt of Taft, who
recently resigned as Civil
Defense Director for the
County Eichhlatt. told the
court he had enjoyed the work,
and was resigning because of
health, expressed thanks for
the cooperation received and
offered his continued services
whenever possible
