Have you ever fisht-d for gar’’ Nome people have so much
fun al il that they give up other kinds of fishing and just
become gar fishermen especially in the hottest part of the
summer
Car are a lot of fun to catch and one species, the long
rawed, is considered a fine loud fish I have never had the
op|M>rtunity to eat one hut I have seen them ilressed out and
the meal is beautiful very white and flaky with a minimum
of fames A lot of fishermen claim that they are a lot tletter to
eat than any catfish If this is true they must he delicious
The gar is a sporty fish to catch This elongated speed
ster thinks he's half tarpon and half wild horse If you're
addicted to fighting large heavy fish, you need to find a place
that has a good imputation of alligator gurs These
heavyweights go up to 200 pounds and more and will put your
medium to heavy saltwater tackle to the test
The thing that discourages most fishermen is trying to
set a hook in the hard, bony mouth of the gar The trick is to
not use a hook There is a way to catch them w ith a wire loop
and a small fish for hait hut due to a technicality in the law
this is illegal in many places This method also has the
disadvantage of not being a very good method of fishing if
you need tocast very la< to reach the fish It requires the use
ol a float and it is a clumsy arrangement
There is a simple, cheap way to make an artificial lure
that dis^s a good job on gars Take a quarter inch while nylon
rope Id to 12 inches long and double it to form a small loop at
one end Wrap a nylon line around it very lightly so the small
loop will stay, then unravel the rope to form a fluffy nylon
tassel about six inches long Tie your line to the small loop of
the tassel and you're in business W hen the gar clamps down
on the lure, and he will if he sees it, the nylon filaments will
tangle in his many needle like teeth and there's no way that
he can escape - unless you break the line Some people put a
short wire leader in front of the lure and a small lead weight
will make it cast better
Don I get the idea that because I'm talking about gar
fishing that I'm suggesting gar eradication I believe that one
of the worst things that can happen to a lake is to get rid of all
the gars They are a predatory fish and our fishing holes need
them
Their diet is mostly shad and sunfish and this is almost
always what we have loo much of. so they contribute their
share of keeping our waters from becoming overpopulated
with bait fish
When the hot. still summer days make fishing slow and
the gars can lie seen swimming around on or near the surface
you can have a lot of fun catching them and you may find a
new delicacy for your table

In Sunset Lake
Some baby striped bass
stocked experimentally in
Sunset Take, between Portland
and Corpus Christi. have
survived and shown ex-
ceptional growth
In a test of survival in
saltwater at temperatures
above 70 degrees some MOO
one inch striped bass were
stocked in Sunset Lake on May
f>. 1077 by Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department (TPWD)
biologists On dune 3 three of
these fish were recovered from
the eighty degree water They
were fat and healthy and had
grown an astonishing average
of two inches in the twenty-nine
days
Some Sabine Lake im
(Miundments on the upper coast
received 10,nun of these little
fish on May fi Two fish
rcovered on June 3 from this
slocking were only two inches
long, nothing like the growth of
the Sunset Lake fish
E G Simmons. TPAWD
field operations supervisor,
who released the fish in Sunset
Lake said that twenty-five
percent of them died shortly
after stocking but the rest
seemed to have survived and
done well.
Slripcd bass, a native fish of
the Atlantic seaboard,
probably will never spawn in
the Corpus Christi area They
need about fifty miles of dam
free, pollution-free river for
