Children with asthma lose
more days from school than
otherwise healthy youngsters
are sometimes limited in sports
activities, and may suffer a
wheezing episode while at
school.
All of these occurrences are
noticed by classmates, and as a
result, the asthmatic child fre-
quently feels rejection and
isolation, says the American
I-ling Association of Texas
Children with asthma want to
feel like "one of the gang".
They do not want to be singled
out by their classmates as "dif-
ferent". Teachers' attitudes of
acceptance and calmness can
help classinates understand
astluna. They also can help the
child with asthma feel fully in-
tegrated into school activities.
Teachers and school nurses
should be informed if a child
has asthma, says the Lung
Association. Parents - even the
child's physician - can explain
the extent of the impairment, if
there is one They should also
explain what action is required
and the treatment adivsed if
wheezing occurs.
