Gregory
In the Portland city elec-
tion. a mayor will be
elected, a council member
for a one-year term, and
two council members for
two-year terms
Bobby Whittington is the
only candidate for mayor,
and Joe Burke (incum-
bent i is the only candidate
for the one-year seat.
Candidates for the two-
year council seats are Alice
Chisholm i incumbent),
Tom Black. Paul Kinstley
and Pat Hattersley.
Voters in Precinct 6 will
vote at city hall, and the
fire station will be the
voting place for voters in
Precinct 19
In the G-P ISO election,
two members will be
elected to the board of
trustees for three-year
terms
On the ballot are May
Kollaja i incumbent i, Jerry
Kiley, Nathan East, Har-
riet Cogaugh and Judy
Bledsoe.
In Portland, voles in the
school board election will
be cast at T M Clark
Elementary School, and in
Gregory voting will be at
Stephen F Austin Elemen-
tary School
A mayor and five
aldermen will be elected in
the Gregory dty election
which will be held at the
fire station
On the ballot for mayor

City To Try Again

The city council is going to
try again
For almost a year they have
been patiently waiting for
Stacey Communications. Inc .
of Houston to get on with the
building here of a cable televi-
sion system.
Tuesday mght the council
held the first reading of an or-
dinance which will negate the
franchise with that company.
According to the council, the
Stacey company has defaulted
on their contract. They will
forfeit their cash bond.
Bob Jones, president of the
company, was to have been at
this week's council meeting to
provide his solutions to pro-
blems plaguing lus company,
and to advise the council on the
action he would take to get the
project undeway.
He didn't show The city
received a phone call advising
that he was "detained" in
Chicago.
Columbia Communications
of Houston has expressed an in-
terest in taking on the project
Three of the former associates
of the Stacey company now are
with Columbia and have in-
dicated to the city staff that
they would be here for the next
council meeting April 15.
According to conversation by
the staff and council, there is a
possibility that other com-
panies could be present also at
that time to indicate an interest
in the building of the Portland

Tryouts Slated
Portland Girls Softball Association will hold tryouts for
the minor division at the softball fields at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday,
Aprils.
Sophomore division tryouts are set for 6 30 p.m.
Thursday, April 10, and the senior division tryouts will be at 8
p.m.
All girls are asked to bring their gloves.
Tryouts are for all girls new to the association and girls
- who are mov ing up from another division

Maundy Thursday
Communion Set
A Maundy Thursday service of communion will be held
at 7 p.m Thursday, April 3 (tonight i at First Presbyterian
Church.
During the service, communicants will make a profes-
sion of their faith followed by a reception in their honor.
Other Holy Week services will include a Good Friday ser-
vice of Tenebrae at7p.m. Friday, April 4
Easter Sunday services will be held at 11 a.m., following
a breakfast served at the church at 8 a.m.
The congregation invltas members of the community to
worship with them during Holy Week at First Presbyterian
Church. Crosby and Reynolds Sts., one block south of l.atig

regional University
Interscholastic league (UIL)
concert competition
Under the direction of Melva
Sebesu. G-P choral groups this
year received three
Sweepstakes Trophies one by
the Combined Choir, one by the
Chordsmen and one by the
Choraieirs - for their superior
ratings in both concert and
sightreading
Tne concert contest was held
Tuesday, March 25, at Corpus
Christi State University with
more than 40 choirs
participating
Only six Sweepstakes
Awards were made In addition

Jones High School of Beeville,
Alice High School and King
High School. Corpus Christi,
were winners
The concert performances
were adjudicated by Rosemary
Heffley. Mesquite High School.
(Toys Webb, Perryton High
School, and Milton Pullen.
Abilene Christian College
Sightreading judges were
Virginia Flood, MacArthur
High School. San Antonio, Ken
Mills, Monohans High School
and Morris Stevens. Austin

Football board will meet at
7:30 p m Thursday, April 10, at
the fire station
Officers elected at the March
meeting were President,

player agent. Marvin Duncan,

and Mrs Dorsey Farley She Is
a member of the Art Club,
plays oboe in the Wildcat Band,
and plays guitar in the Acustic
Guitar Festival She wants to
go to Del Mar and then to the
University of Arnona. It will be
teaching later on. but first she
would like to be a flight atten
dant.

Candi Washburn, U, is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs
George Washburn and a G PMS
sophomore She is a member ot
the high school choir and also
sings in the ensemble and youth
choir at Gardendale Baptist
Church. Corpus Christi She is a
member ot the church's soft
ball team and participates in
many other church activities
GRACIE HERRERA
Gracie Herrera, l(, is a G PHS
junior and the daughter of Mr
and Mrs Ruperto Herrera She
is a member of the Spanish
Club. DECA and the Business
Club She also belongs to the Lo
Ma|or de (t senior club. Other
than wanting to attend college,
she has no other firm plans In
the talent portion of the
Pageant she will perform a
Mexican folk dance.

KIM LUCEY
Kim Lucey, H, is a tumor and
the daughter of Mr and Mrs.
John Lucey. She is featured
twirler with the Wildcat Band
and plays the flute She is a
member of the Spotlighters.
Thespians. NFL, Art Club and
Student Council. She will go on
to college to major in dancing
and wants to become a dancing
teacher. She will do a jazz
dance in the Pageant
OIANESALAZAR
Diane Salazar. 17. is a junior
and the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs Donald Simoneau. She is
in the tennis class and an active
member ot Portland Baptist
church where she sings in the
choir and has taught Sunday
school She has her sights set on
attending Tyler Junior College
at Tyler and then plans on get
ting into secretarial work and
modeling

mayor in February," Bobby
Whittington noted this week

as I had promised the people I

to run for mayor

Riley Storks
Election To
School Board
Jerry G. Riley, 39, who has
three children in Gregory-
Portland schools, is seeking
election to the G-P ISD board of
trustees in the April 5 election
Riley and his wife, Mary
Ellen, have been Portland
residents since 1968. Their
three children are Jerry, 15;
Kathy, 12; and Robert 9. The
family makes its home at 1019
Starlite.
Riley was bom and raised in
Livingston. He served 10 years
in the U. S Marine Gorps, two
of those years were spent in
Vietnam
He has served four years in
the Portland Volunteer Fire
Department and currently is
president of that organization
He has been on the city’s traf-
fic advisory board two years,
JERRY RILEY
and has coached Uttle league
baseball three years.
RUey has been an employee
of Sun Oil Co. 13 years.

Candidate
For Council
Paul Kinstley, 41, a Portland
resident since 1969, is a can-
didate for the Portland city
council.
Kinstley, his wife, Darlene,
and their three children - Kelly,
17, Jon, 14, and Tonya, 11, live
at 128 Markam Place.
He is a graduate of the Texas
Crime Prevention Institute,
and the National Crime
Prevention Institute at the
University of Louisville.
Kinstley attended Del Mar Col-
lege and Southwest Texas State
University
As a former regional crime
prevention coordinator for the
Coastal Bend Council of
Governments, which includes
12 counties and 24 law enforce-
ment agencies, he worked
closely with the G-P school

Zambrano
Is Socking
Third Term
Celstino Zambrano, who is
completing his second term as
mayor of Gregory, is seeking
re-election to that office in the
Gregory city election
Saturday. April 5.
Zambrano, a native of
Gregory, served one term on
the city council prior to being
elected mayor
When Zambrano became
mayor, one of his first tasks
was to work up, with the city
engineer, a master plan for
Gregory
Taken into consideration
were the wster system, sewer
system, drainage, streets, city
hall, library, police station,
parks and recreation
Funds were obtained in the
amount of 8250,000 for a
drainage project, a fire station
CELESTINO ZAMBRANO
was built, some sewage work
has been accomplished,
additional fire hydrants have
been installed, and a city park
