Last night we visited the CITY. First open post since arriving here, f
and can be the last as far as I'm concerned for there's Nothing in
the CITY. We had seen the show "Princess O'Rouke" so that was out.
Had dinner at the Blue Bonnett (1.75 steak which was lousy), then did
some shopping, and ended up at the Avengerette Club which is for
WASP's. It is also private except for all the officers & enlisted
men the gals PICK up. Can buy setups, and dance to a nickelodian.
Very uninteresting. Sue and I had a coke and left. Got home 22:30
with the decision that that was our last unless we had something
prearranged. We also agreed we were glad for the clothes that every
one has to wear here on the Post (not allowed to wear anything but
dresses off the Post) as we had never seen a rattier looking bunch of
girls. I hope I never get to the point of not caring about personal
appearance. Everything is full up in Sweetwater on Saturday nights.
Jean's (my baymate) boyfriend came in last night from Louisiana and
couldn't get a room anywhere.
We also got paid yesterday. Our checks amounted to $18.00 & some
change when they got through with it. Then (like the Army) there was
the line waiting. $2.00 for some welfare thing - $2.85 for laundry -
and aftr the trip to the CITY, I ended up with $1.00 from the
paycheck.
As for Theory of Flight, I can pass the tests as long as the
questions are multiple choice. We've had 2 - 93 on first one and 100
on 2nd. There are 50 pages in Bulletin, 23 devoted to Theory of
Flight. I will read it. Missed one on Engine Test Friday which was
much better than I had expected.
The other girls here have as much trouble with Theory of Flight as I
do, so they are of little help. In fact, they mostly question me
'cause I've been lucky enough to get the highest marks in this Bay--
especially Math. I hold Math class every time we have a quiz. It
helps me too so I like to do it.
Sue and I had our pictures taken last night. We get the proofs
Tuesday night.. If come out okay, will send you one.
Two of the girls in our flight soloed Saturday morning. We threw
them both in the Wishing Well. They were in classes that had girls
sick so got to fly 2 periods a day. I have 6 hours & 43 minutes.
Start on landings in the morning. My very weakest point. Had a good
ride Saturday. Series of Stalls, Power on and off, and Spins, and
power let down, etc. Instructor put it in a power on spin & told me
to recover. Came out beautifully. He says, you're okay on those, no
use wasting time on any more. When they say pop the stick on
recovery, they mean it. First one I did, I almost threw both of us
out. Too slow. I didn't like the feeling so hurridly changed my
ways. My Instructor told me to forget I had ever had any landings if
I ever wanted to be able to make them right. Friday, he says, "Okay
you have it" on landing. I made a. beautiful wheel landing much to
my surprise 'cause my intentions were a 3 point. He says very good,
but next time, put your base leg our a little further if you're going
to make a wheel landing 'cause have to be stopped by time we get to
the Tee. I said "Yes Sir".
It's nearly 12:00 now. Sue & I are going to eat here & then go into
town to see Lady in the Dark. Have heard it is not a very good
picture but thought it might prove relaxing.June 12, 1944 - Monday
