Just get 2 periods a day now. Have more solo than anyone in flight
except one washback from W7. It isn't good either for the more you
have, the better you should be.
Sue is still in hospital with Intestinal Flu, and Mary Thoits joined
her today. Seems an epidemic is sorta going around.
July 25, 1944 - Tuesday
Had two WASP's killed last week. One, Beverly Moses, graduated since
I've been here. We never get details so don't know what happened.
The instructors are throwing a party Saturday night. Me, I go on OD
duty 9:00 pm Saturday to 9:00 pm Sunday. So, I will be answering,
"Avenger Field" for 24 hours while my dear Baymates are out getting
plastered. Oh well, I'll feel good Sunday while they all have
hangovers.
Just heard Flt 1 had 6 ground loops this morning. Quite windy today.
No wonder they were all called in about 10:00 AM. Hope there's a few
planes left for us this afternoon, and with the wings in good shape
for that wringing I'm going to get. Guess I'll have a bruised
abdomen for another week from hanging on that belt.
July 27, 1944 - Thursday
This is the hottest day we've had, and very little wind. Came in to
field today and the Tee had been changed. Had to turn out and
finally got into right traffic pattern, but came in so darn hot I had
to go around. Here it isn't safe to fly unless there's a brisk wind.
My baymate who had ground looped twice, nosed a ship up yesterday. A
W6 girl, taxing out in a PT for a cross country trip, nosed her ship
up yesterday too. Also 2 BT's collided. Result of pilot letting one
get away on takeoff and ran into another at Abilene yesterday on take
off. One burned, the other damaged badly but all four got out
uninjured. Two girls in one, and an instructor and student in the
other. About half of the main field here is blocked off for
construction work. It's really a mess. What a day was yesterday.
Today, I go out to do acrobatics. I wonder if I'll ever be able to
do Slow Rolls or Immelmanns. Snap Rolls & Loops are very easy but you
should see my Split S's. I came down first time with an airspeed
reading of 180. I set the Trim Tab nose heavy, then I can't get the
darn stick back.

Last night we were all called out to the Gym for a meeting. It
turned out tht the main speaker was the head of the Sweetwater
Chamber of Commerce, and the purpose of his talk was to get all
the WASP trainees to write their relatives, friends, etc., to ask
them to write their Congressmen in order to get Congress to pass a
bill to accept the WASPs in the Army Air Corps. The only reason he
gave was that we should do this, "to save General Arnold's face", and
that "General Arnold says we are needed". It looks to me like
Sweetwater hates to give up their little "goldmine" on the hill. It's
hard for me to feel we are needed when the Army & Navy are putting
thousands of potential pilots in the walking army. Perhaps I haven't
the right information, but from all I've read and heard, we certainly
are not needed.
Had dual first period this morning on Hurdle Landings. Supposed to/7
