Everyone feels sure that we'll get off about 1300 Friday until 2200
Sunday. But we won't be told until Friday so it makes'it darn
difficult to make plans.
August 8, 1944 - Tuesday
We have to fall out for Mess at 20:00; however, Terry, Sue & I have
already eaten in the Canteen. We still have to meet the formation,
but then can come right back. Our new schedule is Terrific. We had
breakfast at 6:25 this morning. Flight Line 7:15, and oh what a
bunch of gadgets. We received a Cockpit Procedure on a legal sheet
of paper which we are to know word for word by tomorrow, plus a sheet
on Radio Procedure, plus two large phamplets on Traffic Regulations,
and the AT6, plus a few more. Then we went out and started it. They
each have own battery. I still know very little, but I'm learning.
Our instructor, Mr. Larson, seems like a swell guy so far.
We had noon Mess formation at 14:00. Then an hour of PT and then 2
hours of Navigation, and an hour of Pre Maintenance & Link which we
start tomorrow. And I thought we used to be busy.
The kids had a wonderful time in San Antonio. Terry's boyfriend met
her there and she says they are planning to marry on his next leave.
Sue says, "the Cockpit Procedure of the AT6 now has her in a hell of
a fix". She's studying, and I must do the same.
August 14, 1944 - Monday
Have 4 1/2 hours on the AT6. Will get an hour and 1/2 tomorrow, and
if weather permits, should solo (I hope) about Thursday or Friday.
Have to pass a written test over the AT6 before can solo. We get it
tomorrow night. Hear it's plenty tough. Between now & tomorrw at
20:00, I have to read a manual on the AT6 plus another manual on
Advanced Single Engine Training. Link has driven me nuts -
"Instruments don't bother me--bother me--bother me--".....
August 20, 1944 - Sunday
From the latest we hear here, there is a great possibility AGAIN of
this place being closed about Sept 1. We hear the American Legion is
having a lot to do with some bill in Congress to get this place
closed immediately. Most we get though is rumor. The C.O. was
lifted of his position this week for his relations with trainees --
fine thing, no?
I soloed the AT last Friday and again Saturday. I fly first tomorrow
morning for my 3rd supervised solo then 3rd period in the Area. Have
total 10 hours now. We get only 30 hours on Transition, so will be
almost finished by Sept. 1, I hope. My instructor has his statement
of availability effective Sept 8th, and is going with American
Airlines. Has little interest in us, although a swell guy as far as
we are concerned otherwise. As usual, it's nearly time for Taps.
August 27, 1944 - Sunday
Just read a clipping on the WASPs. It is the first news item I have
seen stating a WASP had actually accomplished something. Things here
are becoming tougher by the minute. Three of our Flight have been
