The Greek Difficulty,—The negotia-
tions on the Greek difficulty have not ap-
proached a conclusion. It is understood that
the French Cabinet insist on the execution of
the London Convention, pure ond simple; but
Lord Normanby is still in Paris, and an ulti-
ma turn, satisfactory to all parties, will, it is
expected, be agreed on.
Advices from Paris, of Thursday evening,
the 30th, says:
The news in reference to the Greek ques-
tion was contradictory; but the general opin-
ion is that it approaches a satisfactory settle-
ment. On the Bourse it was believed that the
basis of a settlement had been agreed on.

To My Cigar.
Oh talk not to me of your charming young misses';
With cheeks like the ruby] and teeth like the
pearl,
Eyes sparkling with mischief, and lips pouting
for kisses.
While love lurks benealh each encircling curl-
Though these 1 admire—still claiming no merit
For candor, my failing I here will declare;
And oli! blame me not, for this I inherit,
I admire much more my “Havana Cigar.”
For beauty will fade, and eyes lose their bright-
ness,
Soft cheeks their carnation, as time glides away.
The voice its loved sweetness, the footsteps its
lightness—
Till we know not to-morrow the wreck of to-
day.
'While I in my study in comfort reclining,
Weep not (hat time’s visits have many a scar,
Nor regret that the world and its joys I’m resign-
ing,
As I press to my lips my “ Havana Cigar.”
Should a friend prove unfaithful, I only thank

says, however, that Baron Brunow will leave

Russian vote be unsatisfactory.
The Paris correspondent of the London
Times, of Friday, the 31st ult.j says, a rumor
has just reached me, which, if it turns out to
be true, is o! importance. It is stated that the
Emperor ol Russia, after having received de-
spatches announcing the solution of the ques-
tion between the Greek and English Govern-
ments. decided at once on recalling his Em-
bassador from London. It is stated that the
bearer of the order went out of his way to
communicate his despatches to the Russian
Embassador in Paris, who had received in-
structions either to retain or forward the dis-
patch, according to the circumstances’ in which
he found himself.

_ 'Miscellaneous,—Rome was tranquil 'on

raged on learning that, in the allocution de-
livered by the Pope in the Consistory, the day
previous, no mention of monetary reforms had
been made.

ted of violating the laws of the press, and sen-

Advices, from Florence, of the 21st, state
that Lord Palmerston has addressed a note to
the Cabinet of Naples, on the subject of the
indemnities claimed by British subjects. The
King is said to have consulted the Plenipoten-
tiaries of the great powers, who have declined
to express an opinion, on account ol the late
events in Greece.
GERMANY.
Accounts from Berlin, of the 29th, state
that Prussia will withdraw her forces from
Schleswig, but will not accede to the stipula-
tion of the Congress of London. Denmark,
on the other hand, refuses to accept the pro-
position of Prussia, it is'said, on the German
question. Austria has exhibited a disposition
to yield to the requirements of Prussia.
Mr. Whitney’s plan of a railroad to the Pa-
cific has been fully endorsed in the report of
the Committee on Roads and Canals, presen-
ted at. the present session of Congress. The
Committee declare that all other schemes have
originated from this one. -Its chief recommen-
dation is, that it finds its own means, and dis-
embarrasses the Government, while it accom-
plishes a great national work. We give the
following extracts from the report:
Between New York and Canton, the dis-
tance by Panama is 1,117 miles less than by
the Cape of Good Hope; and with the advan-
tages of the trade winds of the Pacific, if the
Isthmus were swept away, vessels from New
York to Canton would doubtless go out that
way. But the return voyage is the important
one, as to time, and could be made quicker by
the Cape of Good Plope; under the help of
the trade winds, and our vessels would al-
ways return that way even in the absence of
the Isthmus, whether from Canton, Java, Ma-
nilla, Singapore, or Calcutta. And as to the
trade between the Atlantic and Pacific ports,
it must be seen that when our Pacific territo-
ries shall have been reduced to culture, the
agricultural products on the same latitudes of
both sides will be nearly the same, necessarily
precluding exchanges, except as the manu-
factured products ol the eastern slope should
be in demand by the producers ol the precious
metals of the western—all or most of which
would most naturally go jar the railroad to
the Pacific, when complefen. ' So that all
these visions about the future consequence of
the Panama route, with the Isthmus forever
planted there, apparently have a slender
chance of being realized. Distance and time
would be insuperable and controlling.
The following bird’s eye view of distances
and time will illustrate the point yet further:
From Canton to London, by the Cape of Good
Hope, is 13,330 miles; from same to same, by
Panama, with adverse trade -winds, is 15.558
miles; by the Cape of Good Hope it is 14,253
miles; but, in returning, the favorable trade
winds would always decide in favor of the
Cape of Good Hope, even if the Isthmus were
an open sea. The distance from London to
Shanghie, China, by the Whitney railroad, is
11,361 miles; time, 37 days; lime from same
to same, bv Cape of Good Hope. 107 days.—
Distance from New York to Shinghie, by
Whitney road, 8,361 miles; time, 25 days;
t hme by Cape of Good Plope, average. 120
days. It must be seen that the power of the
difference in time and distance, in these cases
put together, is immense—sufficient to anni
tons each, to run from New York, Baltimore,
Norfolk and New Orleans,,to Liberia and back,
to carry the mails, and to- aid in transporting
the free blacks of this country to A rica, and
in suppressing the African slave trade.
The memorialists have issued a pamphlet of
67 pages, setting forth the objects they have in
view. They estimate the cost of each steamer
at nine hundred thousand dollars, and they
ask the United States to advance two-thirds ol
the money in five per cent, stocks, to he repaid ,
into the treasury, with the interest, in annual
instalments, during the existence ol the coniract;
which contract they propose shall continue
for twenty years, renewable at the pleasure of
the government.
The sum of $600,000 to he advanced in five
.percent stocks, from time to time, on each ship
as it shall progress in construction, and the
government to hold a lien upon each ship to
secure the advance.
Two ot the ships to he finished and ready
for sea the 1st ol October 1852, and the two
others on or before October 1st, 1354—each
ship to he commanded by a Lieutenant in the
Navy of the United States—to be in readiness
to carry the mails to and from Liberia—to pro-
vide passage and subsistence for such mail
agent, as the Post Office Department shall ap-
point, &c. &c.
It is a great scheme. How it will take in
Congress remains to be seen.—N. Y. Herald.
Whal ship Coral, Capt. Seabury, from the
Pacific- ocean, arrived at New Bedford on
Tuesday with a cargo of 3000 bbls of sperm
oil. valued at $113,000—probably the most
valuable cargo of sperm oil ever entered in one
vessel at any port in the world. She had been
absent 3 1-2 years.

Opium.—This article contains all the valuable

useless principles upon which its bad effects de-

its operation is attended by no sickness of the
stomach, no vomiting, no costiveness, no head-
ache. nor any derangement of the consitution or
general health. To support the above assertions,
