Bulldogs Can Clinch District Championship
Defeating Itasca Team In Tonight’s Game
McGregor High Bulldogs have
everything to gain and every-
thing to lose in tonight’s battle
with the Istasca Wampus Cats in
Itasca. If the Bultodgs take the
Itasca team, the championship is
sewed up and the Bulldogs can be
repeaters for the second year in
a row. If they lose—the battle
with Gatesville will be the de-
cisive game. If they beat Itasca
then the Gatesville game will be
just another game.
And don’t concede the cham-
pionship to the Bulldogs ye|t.
Itasca has no slouch of a ball
club, and they have already pub-
licly stated that they wanted a
crack at the Bulldogs. They
feel that they can settop the victory
mlarch of the McGregor lads and
nothing would 'suit them better
than to upset them tonight. And
tyhey will stop at nothing to do so.
To add to that they get McGregor
On their home gridiron, which can
mean s!o much at a time like this.
Itasca doesn’t have a bad rec-
ord for this season. Early this
year, they had a championship
contender, one worthy of a
threat against the Bulldogs and
all the other teams in the district.
But ineligibility in school work,
injuries and dissention ruined the
club. Marit. was unlucky to catch
that club wlieh they still had
some of their stars eligible and in
school, and Itasca cleaned up on
that team to the tune of 32 to 0.
Itasca tied the strong Vallye Mills
team, 0 to 0.
At the beginning of the season
we corresponded with the coach
at Itasca and he told us then that
we shouldn’t be surprised ajt any
victory they might turn in. He
admitted that1 he had a good ball
club, and wrote us an unusually
long letter with facts and figures
to convince us. J
bttas'Ga boasts one of the best, if
not the best, punters and passers
in the district. They have two
tall ends who are pass hatching
demons, and a fast backfield man.
The line is not one to be laughed
at. Breaks kept them from de-
feating Marlin when they tied
that team, 0-0. McGregor has al-
ways had trouble with the Itasca
teams at home. Last year Itasca
gave McGregor its hardest battle,
with the McGrgeor lads finally
emerging victorious, 26-9. At the
half the Bulldogs were leading
only 13-9 and were being out-
played. They boasted that if
that game had been played over,
they would have defeated the
Bulldogs, and their coach stated
that he too, believed that liis boys
last year could have taken Mc-
Gregor into Gamp had that game
been played over.
Now, again this year McGre-
gor must beat Itasca to win the
pennant. And nothing would
please the Itasca team more than
slip up on McGregor and hand
[them a, whipping.
They want this game so badly
that they 'Cancelled their game
last week with the Grandview
team due to inclement weather to
come ®o Mart and watch McGre-
gor be'at that team 41-0. Itasca
has had McGregor scouted in
nearly every game. They are go-
ing to shoot the works tonight.
All season Itasca has pointed to
this game with McGregor. Now
it is up to the Bulldogs to do
something about it. If the team
wants a victory bad enough they
can win. If they are cocky, or
•feel that they have won the dis-
trict, jhhey Gan lose. Again, the
chips are dowln, Itasca has made
its “bet.“ McGregor has a def-
inite “call” -and feels that a
“bluff” is being made. The Bull-
dogs have a “raise” coming, and
if they do “raise,” the resit is up
to the hand they have to play.
The Bulldogs are in good con-
dition; unless colds, a few stiff
muscles and the usual minor in-
juries become worse, everybody
will be in top shape.
This is McGregor’s last game
w.aay from borne this season, and
the most important. And more
than likely, if the weather per-
mits, the largest crowd from Mc-
Gregor to follow [the team this
year will make the long tyrek to
Itasca.

Chamber of Commerce,
Everything is changing, and
everyone seems to be trying to
out do (the other, at least with
some original idea which pertains
to everything to eat, wear, modes
of transportation, the days we
celebrate, etc.
For the past 76 years, Thanks-
giving Day phruout the United
States has been observed on the
last. Thursday in November, this
day being set aside by President
Lincoln during the jCivil War,
and this custom has been observ-
ed throughout all of these years,
until a few monlths ago when
President Roosevelt issued a pro-
clamation in which he set Thanks-
giving Day this year for Thurs-
day, November 23rd. Soon there-
after Governor W. Lee O’Daniel
issued liis proclamation declaring
Thanksgiving' Day ,in Texas
would be Thursday. November 30.
McGregor wishing to be differ-
ent and original in their idea of
a Thanksgiving Day, Mayor
Searcy was solicited and has is-
sued a proclamation declaring
Thanksgiving Day in McGregor
ito be Friday, November 24th.
The city has received quite a
bit of publicity on its observing
this day; different from either
the president’s or that of the

Make your plans to do your
Christmas shopping in McGregor
this year. McGregor merchants
are well supplied with Christmas
merchandise and the overflowing
shelves and tables are a real treat
to see.
McGregor merchants appreci-
ate your business as indicated by
this outstanding profit-sharing
program which they are offering,
and the general buying public is
certainly indebted to these mer-
chants to at least give them a
chance at your Christmas shop-
ping list of gifts1. What are you
going to do about it?
Wide Area Is Benefited By 1,28 inches
of Rainfall Over the Past Week-end
Universally hailed as one of the
finest and most opportune pre-
cipitations ever had in the Mc-
Gregor area, the 1.28 inches of
rain wheih fell over the past
week-end has brought smiles of
satisfaction Ito farmers and the
general citizenship. It was really
getting dry in this section.

other sections of the state, the

San Francisco, Cal. McGregor has
received publicity on changing of
its Thanksgiving Day observance.
Informajtion received also that
a daily newspaper in our national
capital carried a featured head
line recently which read, “Texas
Town Observes Friday, November
24 as Thanksgiving Day.”
The firsjt proclamation specifi-
cally naming a Thanksgiving- Day
in Texas that there is any record
of was issued in November, 1849
by Governor Geio. T. Wood. He
Set aside the first Thursday in
December, 1849 as a day of
Thanksgiving to Almighty God.
The document, the original of
which is contained in the* arch-
ives of the State Library in Aus-.
tin, was published in the Texas
Gazette, a weekly newspaper, on
November 3, 1849.
In Texas, though., even before
the state was admitted into the
Union, the germ of a day of
Thanksgiving was permeating the
blood of the republic. During
his second term, President Sam
Houstlon on January 15, 1842
recommended to the people of
Texas it set aside and observe the
second day of March, 1842, the
anniversary of the nation a j inde-
pendence, as a day for devotional
exercises by suspending all tem-
poral avocations and appropriate

Texas, this the 15th day of
November, 1939.
G. W. SEARCY,
Mayor.
Thanksgiving Day on he 23rd and
others will wait a week later, but
all will give expression to grate-
ful appreciation of blessings from
a Supreme Being. The people of
this great nation have much to be
thankful for. The liberty that is
enjoyed in this Country contrasts
strangely with the tyranny that
runs rampant in many lands. This
great gift to the individual comes
£o us Without much exertion on
our part and most of u$ enjoy it
freely as a gift from those who
hjave preceded us in the world.
Naturally, las one reflects it all,
there Is bound to be an apprecia-
tion of this great boon and a de-
sire to express the feeling in ser-
vices dedicated to the giver of all
gifts.
Every individual who acknow-
leges a Supreme Being must rec-
ognize the blessings that Come to
him in the course of a year. Every
dlay should be a Thanksgiving
Day. However, Thanksgiving has
become lost to some individuals school gymnasium
who take it in stride as another
holiday, but this can not vitiate
the occasion for others.
In McGregor the people will
reverently turn their eyes toward
the heavens from whence cometh
all aind fervently give thanks to
God for life, liberty 'and the pur-
suit of happiness which is being: new music.
attained in a larger manner by
more and more of the people.
