Absent-Minded Professor a Little Un-
certain Whether He Had Had J
Morning Meal.
There is a highly esteemed pro-
fessor at Columbia who is even more
absent-minded than most geniuses.
His son is a freshman in the same
college. At the beginning of a lec-
ture to his class the other morning
n look of perplexity overspread the
professor's face, and ,his hearers
noted that hia thoughts seemed to be
wandering, from the subject He vas
discussing. . At length tie parsed for
i moment and quietly requested that
his son be summoned without delay.
The young freahman, atartled by
such an unusual message from his
father, hastened to him, expecting to
find him dead or dying. The pro-
fessor had not finished his lecture by
the time his son arrived, and was ex-
plaining things in his usual clear
and convincing manner. At lapt
the son succeeded in attracting hia
father's attention, and this ex-
traordinary dialogue took place:
“John I am surprised,” growled
the distinguished educator. “What
do vou meAn by interrupting me in
this way?”
“Why, father; don’t you remem-
ber? You sent for me to eoine at
once.”
“Oh, yes; to be sure. Now I
recollect. It was my fear of annoy-
ing your mother. You know how it
distresses her, dear soul, if I fail to
appear at mv meals. I got to think-
ing about this when I started lectur-
ing this morning, and I sent for you
to set my doubts at rest. «John,
please tell me: Have I had my
breakfast yet this morning?”

French Army Recruit, Drawn for
•ervlct, Three Feet High and
■ Weighs Forty Pounds. 1
There are, as everybody knows
who has seen a French line regiment,
some extremely small soldiers in. the
French army. Beyond doubt, how-
ever, the most diminutive conscript
who ever drew an unlucky number
from the urn is John Touchard, a
young man born at Manves, in the
department of Orne, on July 10;
1888.
This conscript, who is in hia
twenty-first year, has only attained a
height of three feet two inches, and
weighfl exactly 40 pounds. On April
1 when, along with his fellow con-
scripts, he appears before the coun-
cil of revision for his district, Julien
will appear clad in the short stock-
ings and belted overalls of an infant,
of which he presents the physical
aspect.
Though the military authorities
are to enroll every available man, it
is hardly likely that Julien Touch-
ard will be required lo shoulder a
rifld. The youngest of a family of
five children, Julien developed nor-
mally until he was va&dnated at the
ago of seven, after which his growth
entirely ceased. The rest of the fam-
ily present no abnormality, and his
brother hag already passed his period
of service with the colors in the
One Hundred and Third infantry.
RU68IAN RESIGNATION.
From Maurieo Baring’s “Russian
Essays” comes this bit of conversa-
tion : “I then lay down on, my bunk.
Another Cossack from the other side
of the cabin called out at the top of
his voice to the man who was over
me, ‘Who is that man?’ ‘He is a
foreigner/ ‘Is he traveling with
goods?’ ‘No, he is just traveling,
nothing more/ Then, looking down
at me from his bunk, the Cossack
who was above me said, ‘Thou are
quite bald, little father. Is it illness
that did it or nature?’ ‘Nature,* I
answered. ‘Shouldst try an oint-
ment,’ lie said. ‘I have tried many
ointments/ I said, ‘includingUnions,
tar and paraffin, none of which were
of any avail.. There is nothing to be
done/ *No,’ said the Cossack, ‘there
is nothing to be done. It is God’s
businesf/”
MUSICIAN’S RECREATIONS.
Sir Edward Elgar, ‘the famous
musician, is said to be very keen on
chemistry and spends some of his
leisure time in analysis and experi-
ment. He has been an enthusiastic
cyclist and can tell a good story of
adventures encountered on the high-
ways and byways of western Eng-
land. At one time he made a hobby
of kite flying and was not ashamed
to be seen tugging at a string and
gazing heavenward after a strug-
gling object with a long tail which
strained to get higher and ever high-
er. He is also an ardent naturalist.
