LET’S LISTEN TO GOD ON
THE SUBJECT OF MARRIAGE
Text: Genesis 2:24,25
Genesis is the book of
beginnings - the beginning of
the human race - the
beginning of sin and salvation
- the beginning of the nations
of the world - the beginning
of godless civilization. Genesis
is also the book of the
beginning of marriage and
family life. God is the
originator of the universe and
everything in it. Marriage began
with God. So let’s quit
listening to all these atheistic
counsellors and psychologists
who have no respect for the
sacredness of marriage and
listen to the Word of God. And
it’s certainly time that we bent
an ear toward God’s Word on
this matter of marriage! We’ve
got a national disaster on our
hands — nearly one of every
three marriages breaks up in
divorce! Hearts and minds of
adults and children are being
warped beyond repair. Unwed
mothers are as common as
ball-point pens and having
sexual relations on dates
almost as common as a
goodnight kiss.
First, we must recognize
that marriage is an institution
originated in the mind of God.
Therefore, it must, to be
successful and fulfilling, be
regulated by God’s word
concerning it. God saw that
after He made man, man
needed a companion - a
complementary partner in life.
So God made woman from
man. And because marriage
was originated in the divine,
omniscient mind of God, it is
the natural state of man,
although not a compulsory
state. However, God has
instilled in man emotions and
desires that are naturally
fulfilled and complemented in

male-female companionship.
Second, we must realize
that since marriage is of God,
when two people marry
according to God’s plan, no
one is to destroy that union. In
other words, marriage is a
life-long relationship. God
intended a one woman-one
man relationship. Of course,
there are provisions made for
those who lose their partners in
death, and there are also
provisions for those whose
partners are unfaithful;
however, this can often be
avoided if God’s will is
considered from the time of
courtship before marriage.
Third, we must recognize
that sexual relations cannot be
separated from the marriage
relationship. Oh how our
young people have been led
astray on this matter! We need
to reconsider the question:
When does God recognize a
marriage as being
consummated? In God’s
original design, which has never
been repealed or altered,
marriage is consummated when
two people become one flesh,
speaking of the physical sexual
relationship.
Paul clarifies this in I
Corinthians 6:16 — “What?
Know ye not that he which is
joined to an harlot is one
body? for two, saith he, shall
be one flesh.”
But what are the standards
today? As long as a child is not
conceived, sex is for anyone,
regardless of their matrimonial
state. Were it not for legal and
religious ceremonies, marriage
could be brought about simply
by two people consenting to be
husband and wife, and when
the two became one flesh, God
would recognize them as being
married. But the law requires a
religious or civil ceremony, so
we must obey, but the fact
remains that God recognizes

marriage as being
consummated when the two
become one flesh.
Do you see what this does
to the proposals of free love
and trial marriages and
premarital sex on the part of
two who do not intend
marriage? And since the law is
to be obeyed by Christians,
even two people who plan to
get married are wrong in
consummating their marriage
by physical union before they
are “legally” married. So, no
matter how you reason or look
at it, sex without marriage is
wrong and always will be, and
when laws require a civil or
religious ceremony, that
marriage should not be
consummated until the
legalities are taken care of.
God has His way of
recognizing two people being
married, but He also expects
Christians to obey the laws of
the land.
The conclusion of the
matter is this: We do not need
to revamp marriage or
re-evaluate what is moral and
what is not, but what we do
need to do is to simply put
God’s plan into practice.
Marriage is rapidly becoming a
disaster and a casualty of our
times, not because God’s plan
is no longer applicable to our
times, but because we have
shelved God’s word and lived
and acted according to the
desires and appetites of the
flesh! It isn’t that God’s plan
WON’T WORK - it’s just that
WE HAVEN’T WORKED
GOD’S PLAN!
“If my people, which are
called by my name, shall
humble themselves, and pray,
and seek my face, and turn
from their wicked ways; then
will I hear from heaven, and
will forgive their sin, and will
heal their land.” (II Chronicles
7:14)
