Black History Month:
A February Celebration
Dear Citizens of East Texas:
The ninth annual fund-raising drive for the activities of February’s
Black History Month is in progress. Each year, the observance of
Black History Month is only made possible through the financial
help provided by individuals, businesses, churches and organiza-
tions. Your help is definitely needed for February!
There will be four activities held in February. Two of the high-
lights held at D.K. Caldwell Auditorium will be the guest speaker
United States Representative of Congress, the Honorable John
Lewis of Atlanta, Georgia. The second highlight will be the famous
play written by the renown poet and playwright, Langston Hughes.
The play, “Don’t You Want To Be Free” was written in 1937!
Two additional activities of the month will be the annual “Interfaith
Service” and a “Panel Discussion”!
Please support our efforts. A check may be made payable to:
Tyler Black History Month, PO Box 971, Tyler, TX 75710.
Sincerely,
Rev. Rodney L. Atkins

Recruiters looking
harder at grades
HOUSTON — Athletic recruit-
. ers no longer are just interested
in how fast a student runs or
how far they jump, sports observ-
ers say.
,As the Southwest Conference
pushes for higher test scores for
athletic recruits, at least six of
the state’s top 10 high school
prospects are in jeopardy of
losing a major college scholar-
ship because of grade problems.
“Obviously, grade problems
are a concern for everybody,”
Texas A&M recruiting coordina-
tor Tim Cassidy said. “There’s a
bigger concern around the SWC
because you can’t take a kid who
doesn’t have his grades.”
To receive an athletic scholar-
ship in the SWC, a recruit must
score a minimum of 700 on the
Scholastic Aptitude Test or 18 on
the American College Test and
have at least a 2.0 grade-point
average in high school core
curriculum.
