very welcome at the Antiaircraft
Officers Club, so we would fly to other
bases for dinner and dancing. It was an
experience only the young could do."
For the most part, the women were
remembered as pretty aggressive and
tough. One recalled, after the funeral of
a fellow pilot, a WASP said, "If anything
happens to me, put a fifth of bourbon on
the casket and have a party." These
remarkable women knew what they
wanted and went after it. At young ages
they doggedly pursued their dreams
despite the traditional women's roles as
secretary or housewife. Often their fam-
ilies worried about the dangers they
would be facing. Of course by now,
these women are 80 and 90 years old
and many are still vitally active and
keen of memory.
In the years 1942 through 1944 WASP
flew every kind of airplane the Airforce
owned. They flew some 60 million
miles in everything from primary train-
ers up through high-powered fighters
to the B-29 Superfortress. The WASPpAl
