Griffon Award HonoreeNationally acclaimed as a Realtor,
business woman, and civic leader, Ebby
Halliday will be this year's recipient of
the Historic Preservation League's
prestigious 1994 Griffon Award at the
Ninth Annual Toast to Texas on March
26.
To be held at the Music Hall at Fair
Park, this year's Toast to Texas should be
especially glamorous and fun. "Music
Hall Memories" is the appropriate theme.
Mr. and Mrs. Roger Horchow have
agreed to be honorary co-chairs of the
HPL's annual fund-raising event.
Trustee Virginia McAlester em-
phasizes how deserving Ebby Halliday is
to be named the Griffon Award recipient.
The often-honored Realtor has supported
preservation causes and the Historic
Preservation League in numerous ways
through the years.
Trustee Joe Rucker says, "We are
excited that the Horchows will be
involved, too, especially with their
Broadway success, which makes their
participation as co-chairs so fitting."Having the Toast to Texas at the
Music Hall was suggested by Joe, who
was the CEO of the State Fair, Inc. for 23
years, from 1951 to 1974.
Says Joe, "The Music Hall has such a
rich history, and so many legendary
performers have appeared there, like
Katherine Hepburn, Angela Lansbury,
Richard Burton, Carol Burnett, and Ginger
Rogers, as well as opera greats such as
Maria Callas and others too numerous to
name."
The Music Hall is a wonderful place
for a major event such as this, he points
out, with first class catering in the Crystal
Terrace and a magical ambience that
includes the fountain and dazzling glass
sculpture.
The evening will include a silent
auction at 6 p.m. featuring weekend
getaways, antiques, collectibles, fine
dining packages, and perhaps
memorabilia from stars who have
performed at the Music Hall.
(See Toast to Texas, page 8)Victorian Love Stamps To Be
Unveiled A t WHPC Feb. 15
The US Postal Service and the Historic Preservation League will team together for
the first time on Tuesday, February 15, to unveil the Victorian Love stamps.
Dallas Postmaster Don W. Moses will present the stamps at the unveiling at a 1 p.m.
ceremony in the Wilson House Preservation Center foyer. HPL members are welcome to
attend this unique occasion.
The Wilson House Preservation Center was chosen as the location for the unveiling
because of its Victorian architecture and surroundings.
Special thanks will be acknowledged to Curtis Meadows of the Meadows Foundation
for the purchase and renovation of the Wilson House and others in the Historic District,
a spokesperson for the Post Office says.
On behalf of the Historic Preservation League, President Gail Thoma Patterson and
former president Virginia McAlester will accept a memento (a special cancellation of the
stamp) from the Postmaster. Virginia also will talk briefly about the Victorian houses in
the Wilson Historic District.
The Victorian Love Stamps First Day of Issue is the day before the ceremony, on
Valentine's Day, in Niagara Falls, New York. The 29 and 52-cent stamps go on sale in
Dallas the same day as the unveiling ceremony at the WHPC.I
