Woman Urges
Repeal of Poll
Tax Requirement
Prom Committee For the
Poll Tax Amendment
308 Littlefield Bldg., Austin j
-o—
A movement that will produce
more democracy in Texas Is tlie
description given the poll tax
amendment by Mrs. Will T Dech-
erd, the chairman of the state-
wide Committee for the Poll Tax
Amendment.
Mrs Decherd, a prominent
member of the Texas State Coun- i
ell of Methodist Women, was
elected chairman of the state-
wide committee by representatives
of 16 Texas organizations which
have endorsed the poll tax amend-
ment to be voted on Nov. 8 It j
Is No. 4 on the ballot.
Representatives of the Amerl- |
can Legion, Veterans of Foreign j
Wars, Texas Federation of Wo-'
mens Clubs, Texas State Coun-
cil of Methodist Women, Amvets, |
the Texas State Federation of 1
Labor and the State Democratic
Executive Committee serve on an
executive committee which Is
making the campaign for the ]
poll tax amendment.
The schools will not suffer fin- I
anclally If the poll tax amend- [
ment Is adopted, Mrs. Decherd 11
pointed out.
“Under the GUmer-Alkln law, I
the Legislature has provided re- ■.
venue for state aid to schools11
from other tax sources,’’ she said. ||
"The schools will get the full i
amount of state aid they need.!
regardless of what happens Nov. I
8 to the poll tax amendment, j
This amendment does not repeal
the poll tax. It merely removes
it as a requirement for* voting.
Many citizens will continue to
pay the poll tax as a contribution
to the support of their govern-1
ment."
As for the possibility of lm- j
proving democracy. Mrs. Decherd 1
noted that in the four Southern
states which have removed the |
poll tax requirement In recent j
years, the total vote cast In theI
next election has practically .
doubled. Statistics show that five 1
times as many whites as negroes
are kept from voting by the poll,
tax. she added.
“In these times, when we are
trying to sell the world on demo-
cracy, we must do everything we
can to bring about greater par-
ticipation in government,” Mrs.
Decherd said. “If the removal of
the poll tax requirement will in-
crease the total vote by even 10
per cent. It Is worthwhile.”
The late Gov. Beauford Jester
advocated the repeal of the poll
tax requirement in his IMS cam-
paign. His mother. Mrs. George
