THE BIRTH OF JESUS
The New Testament tells very little about the birth and
early life of Christ. Matthew mentions, in chapter 2, that he
was born in Bethlehem of Judaea. Mark doesn’t mention any
of his early life. Luke tells us more than the. others. In the
second chapter we have the following reading: “And it came
to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar
Augustus, that all the world should be taxed—and all went to
be taxed, every one into his own city. And-Joseph also went
up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, un-
to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he
was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with
Mary his expoused wife, being great with child. And so it was,
that while they were there, the days were accomplished that
she should be delivered, and she brought fourth her first
born son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him
in a manger: because there was no room in the inn. This date
is unknown and different men have set it in every month of
the year. If God had wanted us to have remembered this oc-
casion in some particular religious way, detail instructions
would have been given. God has given instructions concerning
a day in the life of Christ to be remembered. It is death. (1
Cor. 11:26). He tells ns how to remember and when to remem-
ber it. This too many of us fail to do. Church of Christ
