What effect has the “big
boom." \which celebrated its
fifth birthday this year, had on
the average Comanche Countv
resident? How much better off
is he than he was in 1980?
Such an appraisal, at the lo-
cal level, was suggested by a
study called “Americans at
Mid-Decade,’’ released recent-
ly by the Census Bureau.
It mirrors the changes that
have taken place in the social
and economic lives of the peo-
ple over the five-year period.
Since 1880, it shows, the na-
tion’s work force has increas-
ed, the proportion of unemploy-
ed has dropped, the birth rate
has gone down and the popu-
lation as a whole has become
younger. *;;

In terms of income, consid-
erable gains over 1860 were
reported. After-tax earninos to
the local area amounted to
81,363 per capita at that time.
By the beginning of this year
they had reached 91,546 per
capita. It was an increase of
13.3%. T
The figures, as given, do not
take into account the rise to
the cost of living. According to
the government estimates, on-
ly about a third of the' gain
was real.
It was sufficient, however, to
fuel and maintain the boom for
five full years.
