WAR STATEMENTS
Germany.
Berlin, Dec. 30 by wireless to
London.—The official communication
given out today by the German war
office says:
“In the western theater of the war
-we still are fighting for the hamlet of
St. Georges, to the south! of Nieuport,
which We were compelled to evacuate
owing to a surprise attack.
“Storm and cold have caused dam-
age to the positions of both sides in
Flanders and in northern France.
“On the rest of the front the day
passed quietly.
“In East Prussia the Russian cav-
alry was driven back in the direction
of Pillkallen (four miles from the
Russian frontier and south of the Nie-
men river).
“In Poland, on the right bank of this
Vistula, the situation remains un-
changed; on the western bank of the
Vistula the offensive to the east of
the tributary Bzura continues. For
be rest fighting on and to the east
of Rawka branch continues, as well
as at Inowlodz and in the region to
the southwest of this place.
“Reports from outside sources give
the impression that Lowicz and Skie-
riewice are not in our possession. We
captured these plpaces more than six
"days ago. Skieriewice is situated
far behind our front.”
Russia.
Petrograd, Dec., 30.—The following
official communication was issued
from general headquarters today;
“Along the whole front of the ar-
mies operating on the left bank of the
Vistula there has been a lull except in
the region of Bolimow, Inowlodz and
south of Malagoszc, where fierce fight
ing persists. *
“Taking the offensive from Boli-
mow, the Germans, under a very in-
tense fire from our guns, made an as-
sault on Bourgade, Sorjimow and our
trenches near Goumine (Gombin), but
our troops, by an impetuous counter
attack, slaughtered with their bayo-
nets all of the enemy with the excep-
tion of a few who were made prison-
ers. In this engagement we captured.
German machine guns and inflicted'
enormous • losses on the enemy, who
brought into action successively in
this action’, regiments from divers
army corps.
“Near Inowlodz our troops took pos-
session of German trenches south of
Possade, which they entered and en-
gaged in determined fighting.”
u
France.
Paris, Dec. 30.—The following ofr
ficial communication was issued by.
thte war office tonight:
“There are no important incidents
to report except bombardments in the
regii|on of Arras and on the heights of
the Meuse and progress in Cham-
pagne which seems to have been quite
pronounced.
“The bad weathei persists along the'
greater part of the front.”
