Fort Worth MoraliEti
Itlsassumed and bas been stated
by some tvlicco purpose it is lo forward
such rumor that Tirn Gazetti in
refusing to publish the resolutions
adopted ata law and order meeting In
this city expressed IU hostility to the
objectof buch meeting It is baldly
worth while to refer to the utterances
of Tnn Gazette in the past to show
its asllve support of any movement or
measure In behalf of virtue and
against crime Tho resolutions as
passed at the meeting Tuesday night
were intemperate in language and un-
true In fact constituting a slauder
upon the good people of Kort Worth
and calculated to Injure the reputation
of the city To limit their power of
hurting as much as po iblc TheGa

now only becnuse other papers
though with but local circulation have
Been lit to publish them
The assertion that bold robbery
has become bolder and murder
arson rape gambling houses and
houses of prostitution have be-
come ho common and riotous
that it is now actually asserted
etc etc is untrue and injurious in
tho extreme Will the gentlemen
who adopted those resolutions pre
Bunilng to fpeak for the people of Fort

arson and rape that have made those
crimes so common Tliero havo been
n few cases of robbery In the recent
past but the victims were usually men
who sought the company of the law-
less element and by exposing their
money ollcred a prize for robbery
Xobodylsln danger of being robbed
In Kort Worth If lm will keep out of
tho way of robbers aud avoid their
resorts So general is the leellng ofsn
curity aiuoug thu peoplo of tho city
that few of them think of locking
their doors ut nightand burglaries are
extremely rare I he reference to arson
and rupo as of common occurrence Is
oven raoio unjust than the charge of
rojliery The number of tires in Fort
Wortli Is very few comparatively aud
almost without exception due
to accidental causes Incendiarism
Is almost unknown These gentle-
men must have had Dallas In their
minds eye when they added rape
to tho catalogue of crimes which had
grown so alarmingly common Fort
Worth is remarkably free from that
crime There N good foundation for
tho cliargu of excessive prevalence or
gambling and prostitution in this
city but there is a broad distinction
between theso evils and tho preceding
enumerated crimes Robbery rape
aud tirsou are active aggressive in
their nature aud may a sull anybody
however much ho may avoid tlicmj
but gambling and prostitution are
passive and will hurt nobody who
docs not seek them We
do not say that they aro any less a
crime and that the efforts of all
lawrespecting citizens should not be
directed against ono as well aa the
other but they are not Intrusive and

Houston Convention
Colorado Clipper
The nomination of the present In-
cumbents forstateofuces Is a cad omen
for West Texas For several months
we have had the lease law hovering
over Us with Its dl astrous results We
have been patiently awaiting there
pultof the Hnu ton convention hoping
to chronicle th demhe rf the present
iniquitous unjust unequal and op-
pressive land jwdiiy of the preent ad-
ministration If buch a policy is to be
hoisted and placed upon the banner of
of the present Democratic nominees
we predict for them un overwhelming
and ignominious defeat at the
election this fall We are unable to
give the motives that actuated tho
course adopted by the delegates at the
convention and withhold In reserve
our private opinion until tho return or
the peoples servants who will be able
to give a graphic account of what
power it was that moved the wheel to
crush a peoplo that already have nn
incubus upon their shoulders With it
drouth staring us In the face and the
action of the Houston convention
ndded the future condition or West
Texas can scarcely be predicted
at least a more disastrous spectacle lias
never been presented to tho public
It has been a rule with us ror many
years to follow the ccunsels of assem-
bled party wisdom but of late we
have seriou Iy considered the matter
and have concluded to bo guided by
research aud careful thought of our
own
The question pe msto be Will tlio
people of West Texas sit still and see
themselves robbed of their heritage
With us forbearance has ceased in
this matter to ben virtue anil wu are
In favor of cutting loose the Bhacklis
that bind us to un unwelcome
foe Thu sltte of Texas
is too largeitnil uuwleldly Tliu Inter-
ests of the JCist and tlio West are
vastly different and it occurs to us the
only remedy will be found in a speedy
division or the Mate
There are seemingly two classes op-
posing and oppressing the iuterests or
West Texas One acts ignrruntly of
the existing facts and the other is
moved by a spirit of jeelouy both of
which are dangerous colleagues for a
people of enterprise in new country
