1990CHAPLAIN'S CORNER
Florine M. Watson, Chaplain
WASP efforts are appreciated as evidenced by excerpts from
letter of Robert D. Smith, husband of Mary Frances Laraway
Smith (44-2), in a letter to the Chaplain:
"It's very difficult for me to find the words to express my
heart-felt appreciation to the WASP for all the sympathy
they extended upon Fran's death ... over the years, I've
always admired how the WASP organization continued
#Vhold together and even seem to grow stronger..
WASP Margaret (Peggy) Gilman (44-10) attended Fran's
memorial service after reading the notice in the paper.
Condolences were sent by several other WASP and
included the poem "High Flight" which was framed and
was part of the memorial service. He was very touched
and wishes to thank the WASP for their expressions of
sympathy.
The family of Adele Beyer (44-1) wrote a very moving
letter to the WASP who attended her memorial service
last November. In it her son Terry paid a fine tribute to
Adele and the WASP, expressing appreciation for the
support and sympathy extended by the WASP.
We now have a toll-free 800 number to use in reporting
the death of a WASP as quickly as possible. When the
report is received, the Chaplain will then notify the
Class Secretary, Regional Director, and Data Chairman
Catherine Murphy immediately.
THE TOLL-FREE NUMBER IS: 1-800-835-9277 (1-800-
TEL-WASP) Easy to remember!
Some death reports have been delayed as much as a
*fear (or more), but with the toll-free number delayed
reports should be greatly reduced or eliminated entirely.
Florine also has an answering machine so we can leave
a message.piE M M pdsiniIh &Nc] h ov,'mbsr issuE

43-71991 DUES were due by January 1st. So far I have received
dues from about half of the membership counting transfers
made yearly from the life memberships. Many prepaid in
Seattle.
MEMORIAL BEQUEST: In December we received a bequest
from the Estate of Ziggy Hunter. This has been placed in a
Designated Memorial Account. In accordance with Ziggy's Will
this will be spent on projects approved by Jewel Estes as she
works with the Memorial Committee.
"FRIENDS OF WASP"
A number of WASP admirers have expressed a desire to
receive the WASP NEWS. We cannot sell subscriptions, nor can
we financially afford to print and pay postage on copies to very
many extra people.
Last year the National Board established a category designated
as "Friends of WASP". Other WWII pilots writers, historians and
interested parties who have sent tax-deductible contributions of
$15 or more to the WASP Memorial Fund have been
recognized as "Friends of WASP" and thus receive the WASP
NEWS. WASP pay $15 dues annually or $200 for Life
Membership.
Robert Richards, of the P-47 Thunderbolt Pilots Association
and Paula Langguth, a writer for Modern Maturity magazine, are
hereby officially welcomed as "Friends of the WASP"! Their
contributions to the WASP Memorial Fund are sincerely
appreciated.
FROM SEATTLE CONFERENCE COMMITTEE

coordinator and secretary; Jane Cunningham, printing; Nancy
Dunnam, transportation & hotel registration; Enid Fisher,

reservations, Andrea Shaw, registrar; Carol Saas, publicity;
Mary Sturdevant, hospitality; others assisting, Betty Dybro,

Thanks again for coming. See you in San Antonio in 1992.March 1991
