COME TO TEXAS Mil CLEVELAND
The Gazettes correspondent at Wash
ington says that President Cleveland
having been Invited to visit Texis at the
time of the dedication cf the new capltol
has the matter under consideration It
is to be hoped that the consideration will
be followed by a favorablo conclusion
Mr Cleveland Is a good Democrat and
he should come down and see the banner
Democratic ctate in the Union His visit
is not necessary to secaro for him the
vote of Ttxis in the convention for
Texas has locked upon his work while
President and has seen that It Is good
and Is In favor of rewarding him there
for But the peoplo of Texas
love and honor him as the chief executive
of the nation and as a man and they
wonld liko for him to come down and
look at tho biggest and most beautiful
state In the Uaion when it is dressed In
Its garb of living verdure and when the
flowers shall be blooming on the prairies
and the birds shall be filling the land
with natures own melody And Mrs
Cleveland too the people of
Texas want her to come down
and see the state that Is going to give her
hasband tno largest majority ever re-
ceived by any candidate for President
In fact the probability is strong that If
only one of the family could come she Is
the one whom the peoplo would rather
see They have a high regard for this
beautltui young woman who has filled a
trying position with such graco and tact
as to win the esteem of every one with
whom she has come in contact They
want her to come and partake of their
hospitality cordial and spontaneous as
only the hospitality of tho great south-
west can be They want her to see them
at their homes to know them as they are
and they will give her a welcome that will
assure her of their loyal devotion
In short if President Cleveland can
leave his official duties for a few days he
and his charming wife will find It much to
thelradvantsge and greatly to their pleas-
ure to como down and assist in the dedi-
cation of the handsomest state capitol in
America
RAILTiOAD POOLS
The action of AttorneyGeneral Hogg
looking to the restraint ol the Texas Traf-
fic Association and the counteraction of
the pool In procuring testimonials from
merchants to the effect that pools are blest
Ings to trade are bringing the subject of
railroad pools prominently before tho at-
tention of the people of Texas Supple-
menting this action of tha AttorneyGen
eral Is the course pursued by certain
Texas railroads with reference to the
Colorado pool and the strange spectacle
is presented of Texas rail
roads clamoring for the public
benefit that results from a Ttxis pool
and refusing to give the public that bene-
fit through an adhesion to the Colorado
pool
It would be highest wisdom in the
Texas roads to yield gracefully to the In-
evitable and dissolve the Texas pool
The people of the state are unalterably
opposed to combinations of this charac-
ter Public opinion in Texas destroyed
the boycott as maintained by a combina-
tion ol labor and public opinion will as
surely destroy the combination cf cap-
ital as maintained in a Texas railroad
pool If there Is any doubt In the ralnds
ol railroad managers as to the public
f oeling on this subject they have bnt to
refer to the utterances of only a few of
the most prominent statesmen of Texas
The present state administration will be
reInstalled In power practically without
opposition and Governor Ross the nead
of this administration whose Attorney
General 13 now praying for injunc-
tion against the pool put himself square-
ly on record in his first message delivered
in 1887 In that message to the Twen-
tieth Legislature Governor Ross said
I respectfully snggest to your honor-
able bodies the propriety of enacting that
hereafter pooling or combinations be-
tween railroads and other common car-
riers shall be deemed unlawful and If
any officer agent servant or employe
thereof shall enter into or execute any
agreement of that character or shall
operate or assist ia operating a rail-
road under such agreement or shall
knowingly aid or assist In the aperation
of a railroad under such arrangement he
shall be deemed guilty of a felony and be
Imprisoned In the penitentiary for a term
of two years
In a speech delivered at Westherford
October 9 1SS6 Senator Coke said he
beiieved the Legislature of this state
ought to create a commission and protect
the people against pools rebates and dis-
criminations and In a speech delivered
a few days later at Fort Worth Senator
Coke used this language in referring to
pools

Invoked to tho settlement of this great q cs

Itellyoatt ought to continue until there has
teen e tabllehol a tribunal which wll stand as
an axbltr tor between the peop o and the com
mon carriers Ic takes two to maho a contract
always did until now whoa all the railroads
are pooled and tho Sat of tho pool coma Is
elonere as to what proportion of ths products
ot the country they will take for moving the
balance Is a eolu c As long as I am a citizen
of Texas I will never ceaso to cry aloud and
spare not whl c thero Is power In this stato
above the power of the government No my
fellow citizens see that your representatives
represent you upon this question no m an
unreasoning onslaught upon railroads but In
a Just and Judicious and a liberal law which
will protect t e people and will Invite the In
vestmcxtof railroad captal In oar state wjlcli
cannot do without railroads
The railroads of Texas should ponder
these utterances and avoid antagonism
by not doing those things which ore In
violation of the statutory and organic
laws of the state The people and roads
in Texas are cloter together at this time
than they have been for years and the
most ordinary sagacity would point out
tho true pallcy Neither roads nor peo
plo have aught to gain from antagonism
and the roads ought to be able to see that
the same power which moved trains that
were obstructed by unlawful combina-
tions in 1S8S will also destroy
unlawf ol combinations that prevent the
competition to secure which Texas has
given liberally
The pool will go ind It is wisdom In
the railroads to dissolve it without wait-
ing for a Texas Legislature to compel
them to do so
