The resolution f or a recess from nest

and Senator PsddccK moved to amend it
by makicg the recess begin en the 27th
and end on the 13th of November
Senator Allison said ho had consultfd
Senators on both sides of the chamber
and thought the prevailing opinion was
in favor ot adjournment until the first
Monday in December He understood
the Senator from Georgia Brown wonld
support it
Senator Brown thereupon effered a
resolution for a final adjournment of this
seseion at 1 oclock next Saturday
He said he did not believe the passage
of the tnrff bill would be facilitated by c
prolongation of the seseion If the Dem
ncrats were successful at the comina
Presidential election something like the
Mills bill would be passed and if tae
Republicans were succes9lnl sometning
llko the Senate bill would be passed
Popular opinion en the subject would be
known after the election
Mr Evart3 spoke in favor ot Mr
Browns leEolution and Mr Paddock in
favor of the amendment cflsred by him
After further discussion between
Messrs Cockrell Paddock and Aldricb
Mr Allison said ho would accept the
amendment offered by Mr Brown
A mj jrity ot the Democrats voted in
the fctannatlve while a majority of the
Rapubjlcsns voted no There was a de

THK H0U3Z
Washington Oct IB On motion of
Mr Forney of Alabama a resolution was
adopted authorizing the committee on ap
propriations to sit during vacation
The Speaker po tern laid before the
House the sojournment resolution of the
Senate
Mr McMillan of Tennessee briefly
viewed th9 work of what he termed the
present extraordinary session cf Con
gress devoting himself especlilly to con
sideration ot action on the tariff bill Tho
Honsa had pazsed a tariff bill a < d the
Senate had now one under consideration
Etch body had proposed what each
claimed to be a relief measure The
Senate bill changed the rates of cuty and
classifications so extensively that It was a
very difficult matter to make calculations
as to what its operations would be on the
revenue From the best data that could
be made it appeared that based ca the
importations ot list year cf four
teen tariff Bchedues eleven would
be increased bythe Sanate bill
He then proceeded to examine the Senate
bill in detail and declared that on the
motal schedule taxatioa was increased 10
per cent and that the revenue would bo
increased 1500003 The sugar eched <
uio of the sill he contended was for the
benefit ot the manufacturers who com
posed the sugar trust
Discussion cf the tariff continued at
length end Mr Taylor of Ohio end Mr
Breckenrldce ct Kentucky got into
heated discussion regarding statements
made sometime since about Mr Have
moyers ot New Yorfcj sugar trust be
fore the committee on ways and means
when the Miils bill was being prepared
but the matter smoothed over and regrets
ipera expressed
