ENGLAND KNEW Of REBELLION
IN IRELAND: WAS AFRAID TO ACT
B.v United I’rcRS.
London, May 18.—Sir Matthew Nathan, who resigned as un-
dersecretary for Ireland, as a result of the rehelion, testified to-
jday before the Royal Commissions Inquiry Board that the gov-
ernment knew of the raid several days ahead, but did not dare
to disarm the rebels, fearing bloodshed. The Irish constabulary
and soldiers were warned and patrolled the coast until daylight
three days before the revolt. The government learned that tie
rmanj had planned to cooperate with the rebels with a land,
sea and air offensive. It is claimed that the Irish in America
aided with funds. The rebels numbered fifteen thousand. Few-
!er than two thousand had fire arms, eight hundred of whom
were in Dublin.
Casement will he tried early in June, and Daniel Bailey will
more than likely he tried at the same time.
