the summer nearly every member of the
csbtset flnt and last will Cod his way to
Buiiards Bay or U vicinity for at least
few day to talk about public affairs All
the cabinet members also expect some time
fn summer or early autumn to find their
wsy to Chicago and learn of their own
grrat country and the world outside from
ttat great object lesion of mans unlrer
sallty and natures variety
President Cleveland cabinet Is a pretty
cosmopolitan sort of council board In the
matter of favorlta modes of paMlng Idle
summer hours Some hare their fads and
some like the little dog In one of Mother
Hubbards rhymes tare none
Their twtes are aa various as New Kng
land weather Two members are devoted
fishermen at least two others hardly know
what a real good vacation li one member
baa had a vacation most all his life rarely
attending steadily to anything save his
hobbles which bare been useful ones and
solitaire with his thoughts on other and
weightier matters Is the favorite recreation
of yet another member
1resldent Clevelaud and his secretary of
tat are the fishermeaper seof the cabi-
net Each likes to spend his vacation away
from the road ding crowd with a rod In his
band and old clothes on his back Judge
trfham can tell fishermens stories and
hold up his end with a party of Jovial spir-
its on a wet day The president Is more
stolid lie takes fair and foul weather
grimly with an occasional acnteotioua and
sarcaitlc objurgation on the latter that has
a biting humor In It Judge Gresham Is
tin handsomer of the twain In fivhtng cos-
tume To ptak the truth the president Is
iiot a nice looking man In fihtng togs and
has the appearance of a tough customer
whoso lino an amateur would not want to

Mr Cleveland expects to put In nearly six
weeks with Mrs Cleveland at Battards
list There he will do some Railing and
Galling map out his annual mewutge to con-
gress and talk over matters with mem-
bers of the cabinet and also with some
flnsnclers acd publto men who will find It
convenient to be within or near the presi-
dential roof tree
The secretary of state has a farm In Ben-
ton county Ind on v > hlch be will spend a
week or two as a plain Hoosler citizen In-
terested In the crops Here he will gather
a little rest and receive his neighbors In the
democratic style In which everybody walks
1a on him here In his wide open office He
expects also to go to Thompson Conn
where nome Chicago friends have formed a
cottage colony and where the fiihing Is
handy and tin distance to Mr Clevelands
not great Aside from IHbing Mr Cleve-
land has no marked outdoor fad
It Is recorded that Mr Carlisle once on a
vlaltto Bustards Hay went fiihlna for a
half day with Mr Cleveland If ho bos ever
fished at any other time it is something of
which his grown son and confidant Logan
Carlisle Is Ignorant It does not take much
to satisfy the vacation desires of Mr Car-
lisle Any cool fairly comfortable place
with a few books uud n pack of cards will
do He la fond of solitaire and when he
has nothing more nctlvu to do will sit and
play the lone hand for hours Apparently
the reason why he llkea It Is that ho can
play solitaire and think of othir things too
Nearly all the while he is laying out the
cards his thoughts will be elsewhere

New IUsmo T Iod July 4 A brief
visit to this section after M T ars ab-
sence Impresses my mind more powerfully
than ever before with the debt my native
state owes to Poey county and It pioneer
families 1 am especially Ira rcsed with
the duty of psylne a tribute too long de-
layed to the late Profe or nichard Owen
whose almost tragic death brought grief to
so many Indiana people for this gentle-
man was the l > of the original family
that so long gave honor to the state
That the social experimental J ew Har-
mony Inauk irated by Kobert Owen
proved a tallure wai a fact soon forgotten
In the great good conferred upon the state
by the ootulsitlon of no many attire and
Intelligent men Kobert Dale Owea was
known to the nation If not to all the
world as a writer diplomatist patriot and
lawmaker David Dale Owea was a
standard authority on geology and Pro-
fessor nichard Owen had achieved eminence
lu that and other lines
Quite early In this century aa soon In-
deed as the Indian title was extinguished
certain men of German birth rho had
adopted the communistic and celibate
practices taught by George ltapp bought
a large section of Posey county Ind and
on a beoutlful tract of terrace land near
the Wabash erected flvo great stone phal
ansterles or enormous boarding houses
and some halls and storehouses to all of
which they gave the name of New Har-
mony the parent establishment being the
Kaphlte commonwealth of Harmony Pa
Of the many solid qualities needed in the
pioneer days unsettled social systems and
malarious regions of Indiana the Raphlti
bad two industry and enthusiasm Lack-
ing many others they had reached a fail-
ure about the time that Robert Owen the
once noted bcotch socialist decided to plant
his Ideal community In tho virgin soil ol
western America
The Owenites came they saw and they
bought buttheydldnot conquer Robert
Owen had made the same mistake recently
madebytheMennonltea and formerly by
the Mormons Icarlans and Amanua social-
ists of Iowa the mistake European dream
era are constantly making namely that
their schemes wifll work better In a new
country than In ono where custom bos be-
come deeply rooted They forget that the
constant movement and change the suddcu
andnoel revolutions of a new world are
far more destructive of communism than
any old habits can be No amount of com
munlstlo enthusiasm no strength of reli-
gious conviction in favor of socialism can
resist the attrition of a new aud free so-
ciety the rush and roar and effervescence
of American Ufa The first set may hold to
communism while they live The second
generation will be oS and away and Indi-
vidualistic
10HERT DALE OWEN
Tho Owenlte social commonwealth
koou went to pieces but the cranks ns
they w onid now bo called left in the com-
munity an Immense percentage of men
w ho w era not afraid of new Ideas and that
was an element Indiana needed badly In
1S10 and thereabouts The younger gencp
atlon has forgotten how much the state
owea to Kobert Data Owen His spirit
breathes In tho New Constitution of 1S50
which was thoflrst of thco liberal organic
laws which ha u mndo tho west so gcuer
ally frco from all mixture of politics and
religion mid nil disputes thereupon He
drafted the entire Statute of Desceut and
Distribution which has Iwcu the law of
tho state for 40 yeirs which wa i > erhaps
the first statute In nny of the states to
place the retpecth o property rights of men
and women upon ft basis of justice and
equality and which has stood the tint of
time so well that Its liberal provisions In
favor of women hate recently been en
lorgcd nnd it has served as a model for tho
lawmakers of other stutes At m time
when eastern scholars smiled nnd eastern
wits sneered at Indiana as the land of igno-
rance she had largely owlug to Robert
Dale Owen the most liberal philosophical
and practical code of domestic law In the
world Of tils services In congress and In
foreign countries and his help to tho Unlou
cause during th war hU autobiography
gies a charming account
Dald > IaUOueu git tied fame as a geol-
ogist and died n martyr to science Ihe
recently deceased Dr Richard Owen was
born at the old family place In Lauark
shire Scotland Jan 01910 and completed
hlstarly education at the Anderson Insti-
tute hi Glasgow In 1S he came to New
Harmony and save a short residence at
Cincinnati continued here till 1847 when
he w ent to t he Mexican war as a captain in
the blxteeuth United States infantry He
next aided his brother In the survey of Min-
nesota and iu 1W9 explored the north shore
of Lake Superior For some years he Riled
the chair of natural sciences at the West-
ern Military Institute of Kentucky and
was then appointed state geologist of I mil
ana He entered the army at the beginning of
the civil war and sooj became colonel of
the Sixtieth Indiana volunteers After
much active service he liecamo professor of
natural sciences In the University of Indi-
ana and so continued till a sunstroke In
1S79 caused his retirement Nevertheless
he continued active lu geological rracarih
almost to the day of hU death and quite
recently made valuable contributions to
science Personally Dr Owen was a mild
mannered courteous gentleman of the old
school His wife aud two sons survive
bim His only daughter died many ears
ago The original Impress of the Owrni Is
still apparent In southern Indiana and ai
theyearssbowthegreatvalueotthelrwork
the state sees more cause to honor the once
much ridiculed Posey county and rejoice
that the Owen located there
