Curves Ahead
by Matt Platts, Editor
recently realized that I've had my 924S for just
over five years. A lot of things have changed in
my life in those five years, but I still get a grin
on my face every time I get behind the wheel.
Anyone who knows me will tell you that I really
enjoy driving (some might say that I enjoy it too
much!), and this car sure makes every drive a treat.
I've done several things to my 924S in these
five years, mostly maintenance items like belts (a must on the 2.51
water-pumper), belt rollers, seals, plugs/wires, oil-cooler rebuild,
water pump, a couple of sets of rotors, a few sets of pads (DE's will
do that), new shocks, sway bar upgrades, suspension bushing
upgrades, and a few other odds-and-ends. The clutch went out at
Parade, so a new clutch was in order, as well as engine mounts and
some new exhaust hanger hardware. I also decided to have the air
conditioner fixed since it's been out for a couple of years. Now that
I've had all that work done, I feel like my car's almost new again! It's
just as much fun to drive now as it was when I first took it for a spin
in New Hampshire before I fell in love with it. I plan on driving this
car until it completely falls apart - and I don't expect that to happen
any time soon. 190,000 miles and counting. I know I'm preaching to
the choir, but these cars (even the cheap ones) are a blast to drive,
aren't they?!?We had a few non-regulars show up at the September board
meeting that was hosted at Autobahn Porsche in Fort Worth.
That was my first time to see their facility; it's a very impressive
dealership. As you would expect at a Porsche dealership, attention to
detail was at the top of their list. The customer waiting area had a
high-definition plasma screen to view while you are waiting for an
oil-change (or waiting for the board meeting attendees to show up),
there are snacks and soft-drinks, and a parts counter that carries
shirts, caps, all sorts of cool Porsche trinkets (I think all the real
"parts" are hidden out back somewhere). I'm looking forward to
checking out our other area dealerships at the next two board
meetings -Park Place in October, and Boardwalk in November. All
members are welcome, so come by and join us!
October is full of events, there's a Happy Hour at a cool place in
Irving, the RPM Cafe. We've also got a Time Trial, and a tour to
Arkansas. Then the end of the month has promises to be fun
multi-event weekend including a Tulip Rally, Halloween Party, and
our annual Autocross to benefit the Hope Shelter. This Autocross
counts toward season points, and it's also going to be a test of how
we plan to run the Autocross at next year's Parade here in Fort
Worth. Soon following all that fun is the Founders Day Banquet at
the Speedway Club above Texas Motor Speedway. We expect a great
turnout at all of these events, so I hope to see you there!Maverick Minutes
by Wendy Shoffithe September board meeting was held at
Autobahn Motorcars in Fort Worth on
Tuesday, 9/7/03. Autobahn graciously
supplied us with fajitas from Dos Gringos, a nice
meeting room, and special Cayenne test track
runs. Thanks!
In attendance were Keith Olcha, Bob
Knight, Cody Sears, Teri and Charlie Davis, Jan
Mayo, Mike Brodigan, Joe McGlohen, John Sandusky, Albert
Sansores, Wendy Shoffit, Lanean Hughes, Graham Lane, new
attendee Josh Roberts, and back-from-the-north Bob Ande. The
meeting began at 7:25 PM. Keith allowed everyone to take a turn
around the room.
Cody - Time Trial #4 was successful with over 30 attendees.
We made money on the event and overall are positive for the year.
Since Autocross #7 (Oct. 26) at TMS will most likely lose money,
it's nice to have a cushion. We need to have trophies made for AX
and TT season winners. A motion was passed to spend $2000 for
trophies this year. He also brought up a discussion regarding the
Wednesday pre-tech before AX or TT events. Although we have
strongly encouraged attendance, turnout has been steadily
declining. Board members were asked for recommendations.
Suggestions included having a secondary tech location or doing
away with pre-tech and having tech only at the track. Most agreed
that we don't want to discourage participation. Cody and Mark
Steele will make the final decision.
Teri - We have a rally on Oct. 25th, which will include partsof the Parade rally. She'll advertise it with AX #7 and the
Halloween party to encourage participation. She needs many
volunteers to help run this event. We also might need to buy rally
clocks and repair others.
Charlie - Made changes to the Truxster, including an improved
sound system. He will be trying some Parade AX logistics for AX #7
at TMS. He has also been working hard on the timing display. A
series of problems has him working on alternates.
Mike - We have lost 4 advertisers, but have replaced one
and Mike has leads on others. He mentioned the bylaws require
several financial documents be reported quarterly, which Bob will
work on.
John - The September DE is full through the yellow group,
with 100 entrants and 62 instructor candidates. We have set the
DE dates for 2004 (watch calendar). He is still trying to work out
details for a mid-week event at MSR this year.
Lanean - (as Mimi) Halloween party is on 10/25. Teri will
announce rally results & hand out trophies. Contact Mimi with
other special requests. Holiday party location is set at the
Walker's. Lanean told of the convoy of packed trucks that went to
the very grateful shelter on 9/6. Kevin Procaccino (Mercedes
Homes) has agreed to buy paint for the shelter and others have
donated their labor. She also mentioned Founder's Day is coming
up (11/8). DE Sponsorship has been set for next year. Thanks, as
always, to our dealerships, Autobahn, Boardwalk, and Park Place.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 PM.8
