passenger train ran over her kill-

not hear well and it is supposed
that was the cause of the accident.

Berlin Poctal Authorities Have Im-
provement on the Pneu-
matic Tube.
An electrical substitute for the
pneumatic tube is on trial by the
Berlin postal authorities, with prom-
ising.results. It consists of miniature
electric trains running automatically
in a tunnel. Each train consists of
a locomotive and three ears, and the
double-track tunnel in which it runs
is six feet wide bv 2y2 high, with a
trench between the two tracks deep
enough for a man to walk in. The
current is taken from the conductor
running along the tunnel roof, and
the trains run quite automatically,
stopping by means of electric brakes
on reaching their destinations. A
block system prevents collisions.
This system has been actually in use,
on an experimental section of track,
for some time; and if it is success-
ful, as it seems now likely to be, it
will probably be introduced into
other European cities. »

Every family in England possesses
at least one “weak-minded” memher
—this is the opinion of an editorial
writer in the Hospital, a London
medical magazine. The remark is
elicited by a recent report of the
commissioners in lunacy, which
shows that, although the number of
insane patients in British hospitals
continue to increase yearly, the rate
of increase is now less than for the
past few years. Possibly, the writer
suggests, thi- race is acquiring some
sort of immunity, certain families
being now able t > withstand an at-
tack that would have lw*en fatal to
lluir ancestors. The statrirics also
show that three-quarters of tho per-
sons annually certified to be insane
are suffering from a first attack,
which would indicate the efficiency
of treatment and the comparative
rarity of herditarv insanity. The
outlook is regarded, on the whole, as
rather hopeful.
