New York. Oct. 5.—An aeroplane
flashed past the white {tome of Grant s
tomb yesterday, then turning graceful-
ly in midair over the waters of the
Hudson, shot like a falcon baok to
Governor’r Island, ten miles away.
Wilbur Wright of Dayton. Ohio, thus
placed his name in the rank with Hud
non and Fulton yesterday In one of the
most spectacular feats In the history
at aeronautics.
Over the masses of warships, from
whose decks the hoarse cheers of the
sailors were borne up to him In his
elevated seat, he flew for twenty miles
_ten miles up and ten miles back
remaining In the air for 33 minutes
and 93 seconds, and alighting at the
aerodome without mishap.
During the flight business was prac-
tically at a standstill in all that part
o( Manhattan from which a view of
bis remarkable performance was avail-
able. Harbor craft shrieked their ap-
plause; cheer after cheer swept up
from the banks of the Hudson and the
lower bay. for the Dayton aviator had
"made good.” crowning the aviation
program of the Hudson-Fulton cele-
bration with a record.

THE DANGER SIGNAL
Two men were killed and eight oth-
er passengers seriously injured, three
of them probably fatally. Sunday night
in a street car accident, in Pittsburg
Pa.
With the date for the opening of
the San Angelo fair a few days off,
the city is rapidly filling with visitors
Texas shippers contemplate estab-
lishing an independent steamship line
from Atlantic seaboard points to Tex-
as City and Galveston.
Fire broke out in Miles early Mon-
day morning and spread rapidly to the
adjoining buildings, causing a total
loss of $25,000.
A number of Marshall men have or-
ganized a company and will bore for
oil along the banks of the Cypress
Bayou, in Marion and Harrison Coun-
ties.
The Brownsville sewerage company
will apply for a charter with a capital
of $30,000, which has already been
subscribed and 50 per cent of which
wlU be paid in at once.
Stamford will have a committee of
the Texas Postmasters’ Association,
which meets in Dallas Oct. 23, to in
vlte that association to hold its next
annual meeting in Stamford.
Work is now completed on buildings
of the Quanah Creamery and Butter
Company, and as soon as the machine
arrives, same will be installed and it
is expected that the plant will
ready for business by OcL 15.

Stockmen Meet In Amarillo.
Amarillo: The Panhandle Stock-

of an executive session. Forty new

railroads the Business Club has de-
cided that San Angelo must have a
union depot. A committee has been
appointed to make a thorough Investi-
gation with reference to securing a
suitable site.

being marketed at Brownwood. The
first to arrive sold to the merchants
at 10c per pound, but the price to be
paid will no doubt be about 7c. The
crop, like others, is a spotted one,
many claiming there will be a large
crop, while others say the crop will

A sensational advance of $4 per
ton In the price of cotton seed was
made at Waxaharhle Tuesday as the
result of competition between the oil
mills and one or two local gins. The
mills began paying $27 per ton early
in the morning, t&e gins raising the
price another dollar.
Th flrset passenger coach that ever
crossed Yellow House Canyon arrived
at Lubbock Monday. It was the pri-
vate car of E. B. Storey, chief engi-
neer of construtcion of the Santa Fe
system. He is on a tour of inspection
and will go overland from here to
Brady, San Angelo and other points.
One effect of the protracted drouth
in the Southwest was the arrival near*
