Sweet, Colorful, Spring Fashions Are Feminine
BY MAUD GREEN
Sweet, feminine and softly
colored, like tulips, daffodils and
periwinkles . . . spring fashions
are emerging in the brightest
of colors.
The former popular dirty
greens, the turf tones and drab
olives? They’ve been retired to
their footlockers, giving way to a
fashion front of the most bril-
liant colors of nature . . . reds,
yellows, blues and lovely mix-
tures in between.
Fashion designers, from Paris
to New York, have been imitating
children turned loose with a box
of paints, a paint brush and a
bowl of water.
They have splashed away to
their heart’s content and the gen-
eral rule is, if you’re a girl,
look like a girl.
This year’s fashions are
strictly for girls, girls of all
ages. It’s passe to go around
looking like a counterpart of
Big Brother.
Ruffles on their bonnets, vel-
vet appliques on hosiery, hip
yokes and belts accent the long
torso look and coats cling rather
than fit.
Silhouettes seem to have
emerged from the drawing boards
and fitting rooms; the draped,
narrow column effect, and the
long-bodiced, flouncy skirt are
good.
Milady, who wouldn’t have been
caught wearing such, will now be
in high fashion with her crochet
trim.
Bias skirts are back with many
designers predicting the full re-
turn of the full skirt.
The basic dress continues to be
black and buttons outnumber zip-
pers. Zippers aren’t giving up
easily . . . they’re fighting back
and some predict this will be
the Year of The Big Zippers,
which have been carefully con-
cealed, bold and big, are mov-
ing from sleeping bags to pas-
tel denim.
Skirts still stay short but long-
er after-fives are making an
appearance. There are those who
wouldn’t be surprised to see a re-
turn of ankle-length day time
dresses . . . could that mean
dainty, high • button shoes will
again appear?
Milady's purse may be full,
but if high buttons return, she'll
find room for her shoe button
hook.
This year seems destined to be
a Saga of Lace.
One national magazine is fea-
turing full-page colored pictures
of elaborate lace costumes.
Dresses, from knee4ength to
above thte ankle, made of as many
as three or four different kinds
of lace, over assorted colors of
brilliant taffeta, or what you like.
Lace doesn’t end at the hem-
line. Each model wears lace
stockings. . .
One has to admit it’s a lot of
lace. But, there is no denying . .
this is the most feminine year
the girls, from toddlers to grand-
mas, have enjoyed in a long, long
time.
Femininity Enhances
Beautiful, Duti-ful
Coat, Suit Fashions
Gone are the days when a
career woman’s fashions strive
to emulate the male. This
Spring’s designs are feminine
and appealing in spite of the
fact that they are geared to
active lives.
Spring silhouettes are soft
and fluid. There is no rigid tail-
oring and obvious seaming.
Textures are smoother and
flatter . . . fabrics ai*e refined
and understated.
Tender, delicate tones form
the backdrop in the Spring gar-
den of fashion, with tearoses,
gentle greens, marigolds, sweet
peas, delphiniums and the var-
ied shades of pebbles and earth.
As in every verdant setting,
there is a peppering of vibrant
colors too with bold pungent or-
ange, red and vivid turquoise
entering the scene and trailing
along is the ever fashionable
black and white.
Emphasis has been placed on
the complete ensemble in the
new career woman look, with
the mating game being played
in a hundred different ways.
Trims of suits are coordinated
with coats and blouses are
keyed to linings. Ensemble col-
or combinations are refreshing
with pale-toned coats of chalk,
blue or pink over suits of new
rich, deep navy or cool black.
Suit jackets are longer of-
ficially but for those who look
best in shorter jackets and
know it... there are many hip-
level styles.
Skirts are supple, with soft
gathers and many feature
pockets or belts. Pleats appear
. . . but without fanfare. They
do not flutter all over the place
as heretofore, but are a subtle
part of the flattering Spring
’65 image.
Patterns once considered
“clashing” are now called
“dashing”, according to the
National Board of the Coat and
Suit Industry. They state that
it is currently fashionable to
combine a checked or even
polka dot blouse with a pin-
striped suit. Pin stripes or her-
ringbone weaves are often used
in the round as well as up and
down in the same suit this
season.
Ruffled Look
Hair-Styles
Fashions and hairstyles have
joined together this season to
prove it’s once again fashion-
able to be feminine.
The key to this welcome
trend in fashions is the ruffle
Ruffles are appearing to encir-
cle collars and cuffs and to add
softness to v-necklines and
man-tailored blouses. Hem-
lines, which have caught every-
one’s fashion eye this season,
swirl with ruffles for added in-
terest and movement
And hairstylists, who take
their cue from the fashion
world, have turned their talents
to creating “ruffled” hairstyles.
The look is a frothy combina-
tion of soft curls and deep
waves — a casually feminine
look which is replacing the
highly teased, smoothly lac-
quered styles.
The basis for these ruffled
hairdos is a body permanent
which gives hair the bounce and
manageability it needs. And
now, styling is easier than ever
with a new roller method intro-
duced by Lilt for use with the
foamy push button wave that
lets you set and permanent
your hair at the same time.
