Jackets Host
Loboes Friday
ONE-HITTER — Luis Hernan-
dez missed a no-hit game in the
Jackets’ last effort against Ec-
tor, when, with two out, two
strikes, the batter came up with
a single in the seventh inning.
Kermit won over the Eagles,
2-0, for their first district win.
Hernandez, a junior, has been
a consistent winner this year.

The Kermit Yellow Jackets,
with one district win under their
belts, will attempt to make it
two, when they host the Mona-
hans Loboes Friday night atYel-
low Jacket Field. Play will get
underway at 7:15 p.m.
A 2-0 victory over the favor-
ite Ector Eagles here April 10,
gave the Jackets their first win
of the young District 2-AAA cam-
paign. In that game, lefthander
Luis Hernandez missed a bid
for a no-hitter, when a seventh-
inning single, with two outs and
two strikes on the batter, spoiled
his big opportunity.
The Jackets were idle Tues-
day, but had a strenuous work-
out under the guidance of as-
sistant coach, Don Paris. He
took over the workout when
Coach Ken Mays was called out
of town because of the death of
a relative.
A long batting drill highlighted
the session and Jacket hitters
were booming out long drives to
all fields. Paris was impressed
with the hitting of some of his
charges and hoped it would carry
through in the game with the
Loboes.
Mays said Wednesday that he
would probably go with senior
Joe Ben Maikell on the mound
against Monahans. Maikell had
a four-hit, 3-1 win over Loving-
ton in his last effort. In the
Jackets’ last two games, only
one Kermit outfielder has made
a putout. No fielder had a chance
against Lovington and only one
made a putout in the Ector game.
Probable starting lineup for
the Jackets in the Friday game:
Tim Peden, catcher; D„ V. Ed-
wards, first base; Max Swafford,
second base; Don McGill, short-
stop; Stanley Greene, third base;
Jimmy Williams or Hernandez,
left field; Carroll Samuels, cen-
ter field; George Coffee, right
field; and Maikell, pitcher.
In other action around the dis-
trict, Ector is at Andrews Fri-
day and Pecos plays at Seminole
Saturday. Last week, Ector
topped Pecos, 9-5 and Andrews
beat Monahans, 3-1.

Up around Kermit High School
Wednesday morning they were
saying, "Is it a bird, is it a
plane?” It was neither, only
Wanda Alexander, floating
around on cloud nine.
The successful volleyball
coach still hadn’t come down out
of the clouds after her team
wrapped up the regional volley-
ball championship at Lubbock
Tuesday.
Mrs. Alexander was all smiles
as she recounted the events of
the tourney, in which her team of
girls won over both Perrytonand
Snyder without losing a game.
She expressed her appreciation
to the large crowd of Kermit
fans who were on hand at Lubbock
and who had supported the team
from the beginning. Mrs. Alex-
ander also said she appreciated
the parents of the players who
stayed in town over the Easter
holidays in order that the team
might practice.
Kermit will advance to the
state tourney in Austin next week
with the action for AAA teams to
get underway Friday night, April
26, at 7:30 p.m. The tournament
will continue through Saturday,
with consolations at 10:45 a.m.
and the finals at 2:45 p.m.
Mrs. Alexander learned Wed-
nesday that her team’s first op-
ponent in the tourney will be Clear
Creek of League City. These two
teams will be playing on Court
one, while the other two teams
in AAA, South San Antonio and
Lake Worth, will be paired off
on Court Four. Both games will
be going on at the same time,
beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The Kermit team will leave
early Thursday, April 25 and
