Nashville Proposed for the Site of the Capital
of the Republic of Texas
In the fall of 1837 when a commission had been appointed to
select a permanent site for the capital of the Republic of Texas,
Thomas Jefferson Chambers was inspired to offer the site of Nashville
for that purpose. Fortunately my wife Margaret was able to find, in the
Texas State Archives, in the collection labeled "State Department, Seat
Government, 1836-42," the original letter in which Chambers made that
offer, along with another manuscript signed by both Sterling C.
Robertson and Alexander Thomson, offering to give additional land
adjoining Nashville for that same purpose. The texts of the two
documents are reproduced below:
