Aggressiveness key to Hustlin Homs’ hoop season
By Glenn Sattell
Dobie head coach Scott
Talton hopes the Hustlin
Horns can convert a scrap-
py attitude, which will
have to overcome a lack of
size and speed, into victor-
ies. The Hustlin Horns will
have experience in the
backcourt but lack con-
siderably in the middle.
Talton, in his third year
at the helm, is coming off a
14-16 season (6-8 in the
district) after winning Do-
bie’s only district basket-
ball championship in his
first year. Optimism,
again, is running high at
Dobie, and Talton is hop-
ing his team will match
more closely to that of two
years ago rather than last
year’s squad. Realistically,
Talton is not comparing the
1983 squad to that of a
couple of years ago.
“It’s kind of like last
year. But we could have
won maybe 20 games last
year. I think this year’s
team is going to be a little
more aggressive than last
year’s. I think this team is
quicker and stronger and I
think they’ll play a little
better defense than last
Morgan O.K.
Dobie head baseball coach
Mike Morgan was given a
clean bill of health after ex-
ploratory surgery for cancer
.proved negative.
Morgan had a tumor re-
moved over a week ago which
was found to have cancer in it.
He was admitted to North
Shore Medical Center where
the exploratory surgery was
performed.
Morgan said he would re-
main in the hospital for a week
or two and then spend at least
two weeks in his doctor’s care
for rehabilitation of his left leg
where most of the exploratory
surgery was done.
Morgan said he is looking
forward to getting back to
school and working with the
baseball team but said he will
take it one step at a time.
“I’m looking forward to do-
ing anything right now,” he
said. The first step, he said,
would be getting out of the
hospital and he said he would
go from there.
year’s. I don’t think this
team will shoot quite as
well as last year’s, but I
think other things will
make up for it,” said Tal-
ton.
A big strength for Dobie
this year, according to Tal-
ton, is ball handling. Sen-
ior Chris Williams returns
at one guard spot after
starting last year and
should provide leadership
to the squad. Williams
adapted well to his “cap-
tain” role later in the sea-
son and also showed some
scoring ability as well as
running the team. His
backcourt mate Mike
Moore, also a senior, had
an outstanding junior var-
sity season before moving
up to the varsity in the last
10 games. In those last 10
games, Moore showed an
unusual amount of matur-
ity for someone with so
little experience.
Williams and Moore are
two of only three returning
players with varsity ex-
perience. The other is sen-
ior Kevin Carpenter, who
played in the first 10
games at the varsity level.
According to Talton, Car-
penter should epitomize
the aggressiveness this
year’s Hustlin Horns will
bank on. In addition, with
the problems Talton is hav-
ing finding a player for the
post, Carpenter could play
a key role in the team’s
success or failure. With
less than a week before the
season’s opener (Tuesday
night vs. Spring Westfield
at 7:30 p.m. at Phillips
Field House) Carpenter, at
6’ IV2” has the inside track
on the post position. “He’s
aggressive and quick and
he wants to go to the bas-
ket,” Talton said of Car-
penter’s qualifications. But
Talton may be looking for a
bigger frame to battle the
rigors of the board game.
However, height is not a
commodity afforded Talton
among this year’s group.
Craig Tyer and Bruce Wat-
son, both 6’3”, are the
closest Talton will come to
a redwood. Talton will eye
Tyer closely in a scrim-
mage Saturday at Clear
Lake to find out if he has
what it takes to play the
middle. If not, Talton said
Watson is also a possible
candidate at post.
At b'2Vi'\ junior guard
Brian Cummings is among
the tall at Dobie this year,
and according to Talton,
could step in to help the
varsity immediately.

siderable amount of playing
time, the Dobie Lady Long-
horn basketball team should
be one to contend with.
Lady Longhorn head coach
Linda Tate has beefed up her
predistrict schedule in an ef-
fort .to test her experienced
squad early and prepare them
for the hectic district slate.
That preparatory agenda be-
gins Monday night in Aldine
at 7:30 p.m., and runs through
Dec. 10 with the likes of Bar-
bers Hill, Dickinson, Pear-
land, Alief Elsik and Texas
Gty. In addition, Tate has her
Lady Longhorns signed up for
three tournaments: Pearland,
Alief and Pasadena. Dobie’s
district opener is Dec. 12 with
Pasadena.
“We do have a real tough
schedule,” said Tate.
But Tate hopes with the
abundance of experience, the
Lady Longhorns will survive
the non-district portion of
their schedule and go on to
contend for a district title.
“The girls have a year’s expe-
rience,” Tate said in recogni-
tion of the team’s strength.
It would appear the Lady
Longhorns have all the ingre-
dients of an outstanding club.
Seniors Monette Falzon and
Michelle Rother should pro-
vide much needed leadership
in the backcourt while fellow
senior Tangela Punch adds
scoring punch at the guard
position. Juniors Rachael
Standley and Kelley Raymond
strike an intimidating pose to
any opposition inside. The two
underclassmen return after
starting as sophomores and
look to be Dobie’s main mus-
cle under the hoop. Senior
Patty Carvjal, also a member
of the varsity squad last year,
should also give the Lady
Longhorns depth inside,
Sophomore Trisha Harris is an
up-and-coming player who
could crack the starting lineup
and give the Lady Longhorns
additional scoring strength.
Dobie may even have one of
its most influential players
resting on the bench for at
least the predistrict schedule.
Senior Valerie Stanton started
last year and was the team’s
leading scorer before being
felled by a knee injury that
kept her out of Dobie’s playoff
drive a year ago.
According to Tate, Stanton
will not play any of the non-
district contests in an effort to
continue the rehabilitation of
the knee. Tate is hopeful,
however, that Stanton can re-
turn by the time the district
schedule begins. Stanton

played a key role in the team’s
9-5 district record of a year
ago before going down.
Tate is also confident that
two sophomores can step in
and help the varsity this year.
As freshmen, Sonja Pete and
Sandy Grandfield dominated
that level with outstanding
play. Tate said she felt the two
could contribute immediately.
But Dobie’s second-year
head basketball coach said the
team lacks speed, something
which could prove costly
against some of the quicker
teams. “We’re slow,” Tate
stated flatly. But Tate is hop-
ing experience proves a great-
er factor.
Whether or not the Lady
Longhorns have reached play-
off material is an issue Tate
would just as soon not elab-
orate on. At least not at this
point. “I think we can com-
pete. That’s all I’m going to
say,” she said.
Tate will let the players do
the talking beginning Monday
at Aldine.
3 from Dobie
at state meet
Three Dobie runners repre-
sented the Longhorn cross
country team at the state meet
in Georgetown Saturday.
John Engvall and Tony Ser-
na .earned their way to the
state meet with impressive
times in the district and re-
gional events while Michelle
Millet was Dobie’s lone repre-
sentative from the district
champion girls team.
Serna, who ran third in the
regional meet by shaving 11
seconds off his district time,
placed 18th among the state’s
112 best runners. Serna was
clocked at 16:28. Engvall, who
earned his way to the state
meet with a fourth place finish
in the regionals a week ago,
was 31st in the state with a
time of 16:43. Millet, who
placed seventh in the district
meet and fifth in the region-
als, finished 37th among the
state’s top runners.
