UNKNOWN HEROES
Since the beginning men have bestowed honors upon those who
havo won the plaudits of the world. It is good to feel the handclasp
of men who havo won true famo; men who have overcome great dif
Acuities and have reached the lofty heights.
It is likewise inspiring to ponder over the memory of departed
heroes and patriots. Wo Americans admire the loyalty of Nathan
nale who died for the country which he loved so well. We honor
George Washington the father of this republic and we hold sacred
tho memory of the venerable Lincoln who preserved the union. In
liko manner tho namo of Woodrow Wilson is dear to tho hearts of
all. peace loving people.
r Today. Lindberch is in tho limelight and his name appears in
bie headlines in the leading newspapers of tho world. The ace of
.'tho air is the idol of millions of individuals throughout this continent
fand others.
Whilo it is entirely proper that we should thus praise our hon
orcd men wo fail to realize that heroes aro not always warriors nor
men beneath the Capitol's dome. The writer is not disposfed to mini-
mize the achievements of the beloved Lindbergh but he does suggest
that a person can bo a hero without spanning tho mighty Atlantic.
There aro millions of unknown heroes who havo produced most
f -of civilization and have given their lives for God and humanity
whoso names and whose achievements havo never been given wide
acclaim. Wo find them everywhere in tho ditches on the farm in
'( ihn Rflhnnl rnnm. or tinrlinns in an office ehnir.
Hundreds of the noble lads who died in Flanders Field under Old
Glory came from the ditches of our country. Today they rest under
tombs with this inscription. "UNKNOWN."

A QUITTING TIME FOR RECITATIONS
It might bo well for us to state before becrinniW tbU n.litnr:.i

Have you joined a club today? Do
you own at least six sweaters none
of them being of less brilliant color
than tho now fire-wagon? If you
cannot answer theso questions in the
affirmative you simply do not belong
in tho best society.
Tho brick-yard blond that ramrods
this paper seems to have a yen for
trouble. Ho got up at the Optimist
banquet snapped his galluses and
told the folks who tho Owl was
Well ho was wrong. I'm somebody
else.
Being sluggish in our mental pro-
cesses has always been one of our
troubles. In fact wo can't get some
things oven on tho third bounce. For
instance is it the influence of local
color that causes a Tenncssco girl to
go around wearing Texas cowboy
boots? If so to what extent if any?
Tho Owl is as happy as a clam at
low-tide. He has found out that he is
a poet and to prove it to tho whole
wide world ho comes forward with a
small slice of A number one genuine
inspired poetry. To wit:
Fifteen yo' and & couple o' ho's
For a freshman's nervo so fetching;
His heart is bold he gets you told
His ignorance is refreshing.
Ho struts and stares and parts his
hair
In the middle liko a bozo;
He loves to blare he's quito a bear;
Oh yes I hardly think so.
Next week the Owl will present his
impression of the sophomores by tho
same method provided of course
that he Is not assassinated as a re
'ult of this initial attempt.
A young man on this campus who
is constructed along the same general
architectural lines as a drink of
water believes in smelling sweet He
sprays so much of that Cologne do
Ammonia on himself that he smells
like a negro wedding and is smell-
ablo for fifteen yards in any direc-
tion. i
Unk izzy thinks ho is tho duck's

22 calibre to me.
In this school there is one young
Scotchman who invited the Owl to
enter a cafe with him a few days ago
offering to set him up to somo re-
freshment and ho ordered a cup of
coffee and two saucers. A trifle shy
mothinks.
A freshman who hasn't got broke
in to wearing shoes yet and who
never had a pair of rubber heels
makes a practice of passing by my
room during tho so-called "study
hours" flopping his dogs along and
sounding like a team going over a
bridgo in tho middle of the night
with tho trace chains draggimrs.
Somebody please tell him before I
forget I am a lady.
This is leap year. I never saw as
many girls In the market for orango
blossoms. They long to hear tho old
"Wilt Thou" expression so they can
wilt. One of them has recently
bloomed out in a 14 karat Do Beers
solitaire which throws out beams of
light liko tho search-light on a coast
guard cutter and she wears her hand

Exhibit A. It certainly pays to ad-
vertise. Ono of this year's sophs who grad-
uated from high school year boforo
last in a blue pergo suit and green
tie and read an assoy on the League
of Nations and its possibilities can
certainly lino up tho beans on a knife
if anybody can. He ought to Join
tho circus as a sword swallower. Why
ho's so good. that he can cat five
helpings of Mexican jumping beans
with a half-inch knife and never loso
a bean.
